The Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday completed a historic 4-game series sweep of the New York Yankees. Following this win, a Blue Jays broadcaster would take a dig at Yankees announcer Michael Kay.
The Canadian outfit entered this series against the Yankees, trailing them by 3 games for the top spot in the American League East Division standings. After winning a close 5-4 game at the end of June, the Blue Jays hammered the Bronx Bombers 12-5 on Canada Day.
On Wednesday, the Blue Jays took to the field looking to get into a tie for first place. Before the game, Yankees announcer Michael Kay made some bold comments. On The Michael Kay Show, he dismissed the idea of considering the Blue Jays as a “first-place” team.
The Blue Jays are not a first-place team, I’m sorry. If you look at the run differential, the Yankees’ run differential is +105. The Blue Jays, after a 12-5 win, finally got in the positive yesterday, they’re +4. Do you realize, they should be a .500 team because of a +4 run differential? And the Yankees should have at least four or five more wins with a +105-run differential. They’re not playing great baseball. I’m sorry, they’re not.

Later in the day, the Blue Jays did blow away an 8-0 lead. However, they were still able to get over the line and won 11-9 and tied their division rivals for the first spot.
Thursday saw them show off their offensive prowess once again. George Springer, who homered twice, including a grand slam, in their 12-5 win, homered twice again. His team would defeat the Yankees 8-5 and complete a 4-game series sweep.

The win saw the Blue Jays leapfrog the Yankees to the top of the division standings. This is the first time since September 2016, that they are top of the standings this late into a season.
As the Blue Jays ended the day on top, broadcaster Jamie Campbell took a moment to troll the Yankees and took a dig at Kay.
While discussing the events of the game, Campbell would hold a broom in his hand. Though, he did not mention Kay’s name directly, it was obvious whom he was referring to. He would later through away the broom stick while speaking about the game.
We have been asked about the broom relentlessly these last couple of days, so here it is, because we just witnessed something that has not been done in the history of the Blue Jays. Sweeping all four from the Yankees here in Toronto first time. And I can think of a certain Yankee broadcaster, in fact, who is going to have to go on his show tomorrow and admit that the Blue Jays are a first-place team because the standings prove it.

A few weeks ago, the Blue Jays were 25-27 and 4th in the AL East. They have found their gear and now lead the division with a 49-38 record, 1 game ahead of the Yankees.
Aaron Boone reportedly unfazed by Yankees recent skid
The New York Yankees are once again having a drop in form in the middle of a season. The Bronx Bomber, who at one stage in June were 42-25, has fallen off the top of the American League East standings. Despite this skid, manager Aaron Boone is ‘unfazed‘ about the future of the team.

After sweeping the Kansas City Royals in June, the Yankees lost 6 successive games that included getting swept by the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Angels. After the sweep at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays, they have lost 14 out of their 20 games, leaving them with a 48-39 record.
As per MLB insider Bryan Hoch, Jazz Chisholm Jr. claimed that Boone told the players that they are still the “best team” in the league.
We knew we were going to hit a speed bump. But just block out the noise and go out there when we get back home in New York and do what we do.
Aaron Boone addressed the team briefly tonight. He said he wants his players to be “unfazed” by this recent stretch. Jazz Chisholm Jr. said Boone reminded them they are “the best team in the league.”

For the Yankees, their next trip is across town to take on the New York Mets at Citi Field. In the first Subway Series of the year, the Yankees took 2 out of 3 games against the Mets as Juan Soto made his highly anticipated return to the Bronx.
Just like them, the Mets are also struggling. They have also stumbled in recent weeks and have fallen to 2nd place in the National League East standings. Coincidentally, the Mets have also lost 14 of their last 20 games. Both teams will be in desperate need of a positive result from this upcoming series as the 1st half of the season comes close to an end.
