Veteran pitcher Max Scherzer agrees to 1-year $15.5 million deal with the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday. Various sources confirmed the news with the amount given; the physical deal is pending.
This will be the Blue Jays’ second most notable signing following their $65.75 million deal with Anthony Santander. They were also one of the finalists for the Roki Sasaki but lost him to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Toronto Blue Jays also made a run for Shohei Ohtani in 2023 and for Juan Soto but eventually lost both players to top MLB teams, Dodgers and New York Mets. Before being traded to the Texas Rangers by the Mets, Max Scherzer played for the Texas Rangers in 2023.
However, he lost time in most of the 2024 season due to injuries and rehabilitation hovering over the 40-year-old. He opened the season with a lower back surgery and later fell victim to shoulder fatigue.
Scherzer also missed the end of the season due to a left hamstring strain. His performance recorded a 3.95 ERA with 2.4 last year. Nevertheless, he is confident in stepping into the Spring Training in his 100% form.
Blue Jays missed out on Soto, Sasaki, Burnes and Fried. But with Gimenez, Santander, Hoffman and now Scherzer, their team is much improved. Solid A offseason. If they can sign Vlad Jr., it’s an A-plus.

He admitted that he “wasn’t able to do anything” in 2024, but his new start in 2025 is giving him hope for better results. The fans are divided on social media as many are supporting Scherzer while several believe it’s worth too much for a deal.
