When it rains, it pours, and it was pouring heavily on the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night. In the game against the Washington Capitals, the Blues suffered a crushing 8-1 defeat, which led to fans urging the removal of head coach Drew Bannister.

The Capitals entered this match with a 4-2 defeat against their rivals, the Pittsburgh Penguins. For a fourth time this season, they bounced back from a defeat with a victory in their next game.

The Blues would manage to make it 1-1 through Scott Perunovich. After this, it was all about the Capitals in this game.

Their captain Alex Ovechkin continued his red-hot form in pursuit of Wayne Gretzky‘s record. The Russian forward scored his 862nd and 863rd NHL goal while having five shots on goal. His forward partner Dylan Storme managed a hattrick of assists.

In the press conference after the game, defenseman Justin Faulk was left lost for words and claimed this performance was “unacceptable.”

It’s just completely unacceptable. Just not right at all. I don’t think that should ever happen situation like that. We need to have respect for each other.

Justin Faulk said

Meanwhile, coach Bannister stated that his team played well in the opening period, but the game slipped away from them in the second period.

In the first period, I thought we played well, we generated a lot of opportunities. I thought in the second period though our game started to kind of slip away what we were doing in the first. We had a few line changes that put us in trouble.

Social media reactions towards St. Louis Blues’ heavy defeat against Washington Capitals

While one fan pointed out that the old issues with the team had not been fixed yet, another fan wrote this outing of the Blues as “unenjoyable.” Some even threw in light jokes about how watching Alex Ovechkin score a hat trick against them would have been much better to watch.

Check out some of the top reactions from X below:

Bannister was named interim coach of the Blues in December last year after Craig Berube was fired from his position. Following the 2023-24 season, he was promoted to the position of head coach of the team on a two-year contract.

This crashing loss means the Blues have conceded 12 goals in their last two games. With a 7-8-0 record, the St. Louis-based side hopes to avoid a third consecutive loss when they take on the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night.
