There was much anticipation around Bo Nickal‘s placement on the UFC 300 main card if not electrifying hype. In a twist of turn, Nickal was unhappy with his performance despite submitting Cody Brundage in the main card opener. But one thing he won’t stand by is criticism from peer Khamzat Chimaev.
The NCAA national champ Bo Nickal had advocated his main card spot over the late prelims as a good draw and “free money” betting-wise. A -1450 bettor’s favorite, he wished to express his wrestling prowess to the full extent in the matchup. However, Nickal was unhappy with his performance and booed himself after the win. Khamzat Chimaev mocked the wrestling style of the American fighter. As a result, Nickal fired back at the post-fight press conference.
[Laughs] Yeah, this guy's cr*zy, man...Obviously like I said, I am not happy with the way I performed either... So it's easy to be critical...easy to be critical of me - a guy with less experience. But hey, I'm getting finishes, this guy's getting decisions...Bo Nickal at the UFC 300 Post-fight presser
A 3-time NCAA Division I national champ, Nickal dominated Cody Brundage with surefire wrestling. However, in a since-deleted tweet, Khamzat Chimaev billed it as “big bullsh*t” wrestling. Ahead of UFC 300, Jon Anik made prime comparisons that ‘Borz’ and Nickal had similar electrifying energy. Hence, this might have been a petty slapback by the Chechen fighter.
Meanwhile, Chimaev has caught flak for questionable decision wins over Gilbert Burns (UFC 273) and Kamaru Usman (UFC 294). More so about the cardio of the Chechen fighter if the fight was scheduled for five rounds. Nickal alluded to this in full force. Now 6-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC, he has won all career victories via stoppage. It remains so impressive that even Dana White commended his performance.
Bo Nickal discloses what Dana White said to him right after his win at UFC 300
Wrestling prodigy Bo Nickal needed less than two rounds to submit Cody Brundage on the UFC 300 main card. He submitted him with a rear-naked choke at the 3:38 mark of their middleweight bout. Consequently, this marks the first time an opponent dragged Nickal to a fight to the second round.
The college wrestling standout was given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. No rising star in the history of UFC ever received a main card spot of a monumental PPV. Back in 2009, for UFC 100, the promotion did not put ‘GOAT’ Jon Jones (then a rising star) on the main card. Hence, Nickal admitted disappointment after the bout. On the other hand, Dana White commended the wrestling standout. Nickal briefly spoke about the conversation he had with White during the post-fight presser.
He just told me great job, keep my head up, keep doing what I’m doing...and I’m going to be a massive, massive star... think that if anybody knows what the future holds, it’s him. He’s been in this game pushing this sport forward more than anyone...very cool for him to do that.Bo Nickal at the UFC 300 Post-fight presser
Nickal is in the nascent stages of his pro-MMA career run; he thus heeds whatever the promotional bossman has to advise. Although it went into the second round, this fight also ended in a stoppage, much like all of his pro fights thus far. As for what’s next, he aspires to face Alexander Hernandez or Roman Kopylov.
