Former Boston Celtics player and legend Bob Cousy provided a scathing take regarding the downfall of his beloved side in a recent conversation with the Boston Globe. Cousy did not let his feelings get to him as he spoke about how the team has not performed up to expectations after clinching the 2024 NBA title.

This comes after the Celtics were sold to an ownership group led by private equity executive Bill Chisholm for a whopping $6.1 billion. Not only did he provide an attack on the Celtics, but he also had an unfiltered opinion regarding Celtics star Jaylen Brown.

The legend claimed that Brown was not the main man to lead the Celtics in the absence of Jayson Tatum, who is recovering from an Achilles injury. It is important to note that over the years, Cousy’s takes have gotten more and more unfiltered as he did not think twice before ridiculing Brown in the conversation with the Boston Globe.

In my judgment, Jaylen is not quite at the superstar level that Tatum is at. Can he carry the load by himself? I see a major rebuilding effort here. Jaylen certainly won’t bring them to the promised land… This poor new owner [Bill Chisholm] must be shell-shocked. The minute he signed on the dotted line, the poop started to hit the fan. Everything that could go wrong for that franchise pretty much did. I hope he’s not having buyer’s remorse. I think he’s snakebit.

Bob Cousy told the Boston Globe

Interestingly, Cousy is 96 years old. He has seen just about everything that has happened in basketball and on his side in general. Cousy, who is connected to the Celtics for decades and won six titles with them, does not think the upcoming season will end much better. Brown is not a bad player, but lacks leadership, as per the former Celtics player.

Although the legend admires Brown’s skill and hard ethic, he feels that Tatum is very different from him. Tatum was the team’s top scorer in each of their last three postseason runs and has averaged more than 25 points for five consecutive seasons.

According to Cousy, the team is about to go through a difficult phase. He wonders if there will be enough guidance and firepower without a completely healthy Tatum, even with members of the core returning for the upcoming season.

Celtics President provides an insight into Jayson Tatum’s return timeline

Ever since Jayson Tatum was injured, everything went downhill for the franchise during the past 2024-25 NBA season. Just over a year ago, the Celtics were crowned the 2024 NBA champions. But ever since Tatum injured his Achilles, things have not been the same. His partner and Celtics star Jaylen Brown has also not performed up to the mark in Tatum’s absence.

When together, Tatum and Brown are chaotic and pose a clear threat to their opponents. This was lacking last season. As such, the Celtics’ president, Rich Gotham, has recently provided an insight into Tatum’s return timeline from his ACL injury.

What I know about [Tatum] is he’s gonna do everything he can to put us in a position to make a decision. He’s gonna work hard to get back as soon as he can, and we’ll see how soon that is. But for right now, we’re not really looking at timetables.

Rich Gotham said

To worsen the situation, they even traded out their best players from the championship squad, letting Luke Kornet and Al Horford enter free agency and trading out Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis. Only time will tell how the Celtics recover from this major setback in the coming years.

Bob Cousy once had unfiltered take on JJ Redick

The current Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick once claimed that Bob Cousy was being guarded by plumbers and firefighters. Moreover, Redick also said that the Celtics legend played at a time when there were only eight teams.

These comments indeed tested the patience of the league’s great of the past in Bob Cousy. This infuriated him, who in 2022 gave an unvarnished answer to the Lakers’ head coach on SiriusXM NBA Radio.

People with less talent will always try to make a name for themselves by criticizing other people, and hopefully getting some attention and perhaps increasing their credibility… I will defend the firemen and the plumbers that he referenced.

Bob Cousy said on the SiriusXM NBA Radio

After mentioning a number of his peers, including Elgin Baylor, Oscar Robertson, and Jerry West, Cousy refuted Redick’s claim. The Celtics great fired jabs at Redick while claiming that he must have had the world’s top plumbers and firefighters at the time and that he was honored to play against them.
