NBA legend sends an emotional message to Spurs sensation Victor Wembanyama
Victor Wembanyama's exceptional talents earn rare praise and comparison from NBA and Boston Celtics legend Bob Cousy.
Victor Wembanyama
It feels like he’s been around forever, but it’s his sophomore year and Victor Wembanyama has already emerged as a prominent figure in the NBA. Prominent enough that even legendary players, such as Bob Cousy, have taken notice.
Cousy, just like Victor Wembanyama, has French roots and, as a result, sent him a message of admiration, where he acknowledged the young player’s impressive skills. Cousy’s resume boasts of a former NBA champion and MVP.
Bob Cousy, 95 years old, sent a kind message to Wemby:

“Tell him he will be the next Bill Russell and let him know that the first Frenchman in NBA history (Cousy), is watching him closely and with great attention.”

The Alien in his rookie season saw him average 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game, and as a result, earned the Rookie of the Year award and then finished second in the Defensive Player of the Year voting. No wonder his versatility on both offense and defense has drawn comparisons to NBA greats like Bill Russell.
Although last season was a great collective success for the Frenchman, the Spurs’ acquisition of veteran point guard Chris Paul is expected to further enhance his development and hopefully their chances. And fans the experience of the Point God, the 20-year-old could be on the cusp of achieving legendary status so early in his career.
Victor Wembanyama excites new teammate Chris Paul with his skills
It’s fair to say that Chris Paul has seen it all. But in his short time with the Spurs, he has been thoroughly impressed by Victor Wembanyama’s remarkable skills. CP3 shared with the media the standout abilities he’s witnessed from the 7-foot-4 phenom during team practices.
"It's wild to see the talent — especially Vic with his ball-handling. He hit a running one-legged three today. I just remember looking up and saying, 'Holy shit.' " pic.twitter.com/1hwRY9xKid

In what was the best season by a rookie, Wemby isn’t resting on his laurels as he is building on his strengths, particularly his ball-handling skills, which are rare for a player of his height. Unlike most big men who rely on set shots and catch-and-shoot opportunities for three-pointers, Wembanyama showed that he can create space off the dribble and effortlessly hit shots from the perimeter.
The Spurs’ preparation for the new season saw them take on the OKC Thunder although without Wemby and Chris Paul. They open the new season with an away game against the Dallas Mavericks on the 24th of October.
