‘Bold’ Chris Broussard wants people to stop calling Brock Purdy a “system quarterback”

Most of Brock Purdy's critics suggest that he is a system quarterback and a game manager.

The criticisms of Brock Purdy are still ongoing. While many do not consider him elite, some call him a product of the system. A system led by head coach Kyle Shanahan at the San Francisco 49ers could have benefitted any decent quarterback, suggesting that if he was not part of the system, he would not have a decent NFL career. This led Chris Broussard to fire back at those critics.

The analyst was on First Things First on FS1 when they were discussing all things football. When they picked up the topic of an NFL Executive calling Purdy a system quarterback, Broussard had quite a few things to say.

It's time to stop calling him a system QB. No. 1, how many system QBs lead the league in numerous categories, do you know any? I think system QBs can win, but they don't put up great numbers. Brock Purdy's numbers are great. Secondly, system quarterback are largely on-schedule guys...Yet, in the NFC Championship game, the system broke down, Brock Purdy led them to the Super Bowl.

Chris Broussard ended his analogy with a pen drop moment, as he made it clear that Brock Purdy is not a system quarterback. Broussard referenced that it was evident in the NFC Championship game. When the system broke down, Purdy read the defense and made plays with his arm and his legs. That shows that he is elite at the biggest stage and not just a product of the system.

Yes, Kyle Shanahan‘s system did provide Brock Purdy with the best setup to fast-track his development. But even then, the way he plays the game is different than what a system quarterback does. Soon, he could be one of the best in the league.

Brock Purdy using off-season to develop his game

In his rookie season, a 4th string quarterback such as himself could only get some scout team reps. Then, last season he was injured. This is the first time Brock Purdy is getting a full off-season to train with the San Francisco 49ers starters. With the way he is progressing, even his head coach Kyle Shanahan is impressed.

But that brings up the question, what if he had last off-season to develop too? For any young player, getting reps with the first team is crucial. After all, there are stars on the team who will not only be there to guide him but also push him to be better. Without any off-season training, he has managed to surpass 4000 yards and reach the Super Bowl.

Now with this off-season under his belt, he could take it close to or past the 5000 yards number. There is no doubt, Shanahan’s offensive creativity will help him along the way. But his improvements should be enough to wipe off that ‘system quarterback’ moniker.
