On Sunday (August 24), Daniil Medvedev clashed with Benjamin Bonzi in the first round of the US Open. Medvedev tried his all, even riled up the crowd at Louis Armstrong Stadium to support him, but in the end, he failed to prevail over the Frenchman.

As expected in a Medvedev match, it was filled with drama. After winning the first two sets, Bonzi served for the match at 5-4, 40/30, when, to everyone’s surprise, a photographer walked onto the court to take his position in the photographers’ pit.

Bonzi had missed his serve and looked a bit confused. Chair umpire Greg Allensworth then awarded Bonzi another first serve, to the utter frustration of Medvedev.

First serve, ladies and gentlemen, because of the delay caused by outside interference. First serve has been granted.

Greg Allensworth said

The Russian ace walked toward Allensworth and gave him a mouthful. But before arguing with the umpire, Medvedev urged the already booing crowd to continue booing louder, and they didn’t disappoint the former World No.1. They were the reason why Bonzi had to wait for six straight minutes to serve again.

With the crowd on his side, Medvedev was successful in breaking the serve before winning the third set. He didn’t let the momentum waver, as with a 6-0 win in the fourth set, he forced the decider.

But Bonzi had the last laugh after a tough fifth set, winning the match with a 6-3, 7-5, 6-7(5), 0-6, 6-4 scoreline, and reached the second round of the US Open for the third time in his career. Medvedev has now crashed out of a Grand Slam first round for the third consecutive time this year.

Bonzi is the winner of one singles title. Medvedev, the winner of 20 singles titles, last clinched a trophy at the 2023 Italian Open (also his first on clay). Since then, he lost six consecutive finals, including this year’s Halle Open to Alexander Bublik.

Bonzi will next be locking horns with Marcos Giron, who also had to play a five-setter against Mariano Navone in his first round. It will be their first head-to-head clash.

Bonzi has now improved his head-to-head record over Medvedev to 3-0. Before this match, they met in the first round of this year’s Wimbledon and the 2017 Roland Garros. After knocking out Medvedev, Bonzi sarcastically thanked the crowd for booing him.

I may have got some new fans, but also some new non-fans. The energy was wild. Thanks for all the ones who were booing. Thanks for the energy in the fifth.

Bonzi tried his best not to be affected by the noise. And after the win, he and Medvedev embraced, but the World No.13, when he sat on his bench, slammed his racket and completely destroyed it.

I never experienced something like that. We waited maybe five minutes before the match point. Then it was so difficult to play, so noisy all the time during the points, between points.

This season in the Majors, Medvedev made it to the second round just once. It was at the Australian Open where, after his five-set win in the first round against Kasidit Samrej, he lost to Learner Tien in five sets.
