According to Boris Becker, Carlos Alcaraz has made a clear point after winning the Australian Open. The World No.1 claimed his seventh career Grand Slam at the Rod Laver Arena after beating Novak Djokovic, and it was his first major title without his former coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, in his coaching box.
In December, Alcaraz announced that he had parted ways with Ferrero after seven years working together. In 2025, the former French Open champion guided Alcaraz to eight championship victories, including the Roland Garros and the US Open. He also helped him finish as the year-end World No.1 for the second time.
Their sudden split made tennis pundits and former players question how Alcaraz will perform at the Australian Open, the only tournament he has never won in his career. But the 22-year-old reacted excellently, earning a wonderful run in Melbourne that saw him drop his first point in the semi-finals against Alexander Zverev.
In the final against Novak Djokovic, he came from a set down to beat the 24-time Grand Slam champion 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 after over three hours at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. Alcaraz had to rely on Samuel Lopez and the rest of his team for advice at the tournament, with Ferrero missing in his coaching box.
After the match, Boris Becker praised Alcaraz for his performance against Djokovic at the Australian Open. The former World No.1 said on Eurosport Germany that Ferrero leaving Alcaraz’s team was a difficult choice the Spaniard had to make, but after winning the Melbourne Grand Slam, it looks like it was the right decision:
It was a difficult decision for team Alcaraz to part ways with the successful duo of Alcaraz and Juan Carlos Ferrero. But after 14 days, we know that the decision was the right one. The journey continues, and he has the tennis world at his feet. He is a very likable player. The semifinal against Alexander Zverev was hard-fought, but today he was simply outstanding.
Nonetheless, the Australian Open final was expected to be between Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. Sinner. But Djokovic stunned the tennis world in the semi-finals as he defeated the Italian star in five sets at the Rod Laver Arena. It was Djokovic’s first win over Sinner since 2023, following 5 consecutive losses.
Boris Becker praises Carlos Alcaraz’s performance at the Australian Open final
Before the 2026 Australian Open final, Novak Djokovic held a 10-0 record having never lost a championship match in Melbourne. On Sunday (February 1), he drew the first blood, winning the opening set, but Carlos Alcaraz regrouped in the second set and continued with the momentum until the fourth set.

It was Alcaraz’s first victory against Djokovic at the Australian Open, having lost to the Serbian legend in 2025. After the match, Boris Becker noted that it was a strong performance from Alcaraz against Djokovic. He added after the second set, Alcaraz felt comfortable in his rhythm, pulling Djokovic out of his baseline with terrific drop shots:
Huge respect, a really strong performance from Alcaraz. It didn’t look like it at the start, because Djokovic played a sensational first set. The longer the match went on, the more you got the feeling that Alcaraz was feeling comfortable. The long rallies at the end, when he stood up to his opponent, made it clear to me that Novak’s time was slowly running out on this day.
During Djokovic’s post-match press conference, he hinted at retirement. The 38-year-old is still searching for his elusive 25th Grand Slam. He last won a major title in 2023 at the US Open after beating Daniil Medvedev in the final. He has reached only two Slam finals since then.
