Carlos Alcaraz is gearing up for the Indian Wells Open, the first round of which is underway. He is chasing history in the tournament as a third title will etch his name in record books beside Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic and Federer, with five Indian Wells titles, are the only two ATP players to have completed a three-peat in the Californian desert. Alcaraz will enter the tournament as the two-time defending champion, as he defeated Daniil Medvedev in the previous two finals. Ahead of his opening-round match, Alcaraz spoke about joining Federer and Djokovic on the list.

I’m ready to deal with that pressure, but I don’t want to think a lot about that. I want to enjoy my time here. Everything here is very easygoing and I’m usually very happy here. And when I’m happy, I play better.

Carlos Alcaraz said at the press conference

Tennis great Boris Becker lauded Alcaraz for his positive attitude. But the German particularly gushed over Alcaraz’s famous ear-to-ear smile which he never forgets to flash even during tense moments.

Carlos smile is infectious…in the history of the game I don’t remember many players with such charisma!

The Pole, the champion in 2022 and 2024, was served potato and cheese pierogies with caramelized onions, sour cream, and chives. She told members of the media and tournament officials gathered there that her father was angry when she ordered him to make 120 pierogies for Christmas.

Alcaraz had never heard of pierogi before. The Murcia native was served serrano ham and manchego bocadillo with roasted piquillo peppers and arugula, and potato chips.

The bread is essential for a good bocadillo. There’s no secret about it. Serrano ham in Spain, I have eaten it since I was a little kid. For me, it’s classic in a bocadillo.

While the ATP World No.3 doesn’t yet know about his opening-round opponent, the five-time Grand Slam champion will be meeting Caroline Garcia. The 21-year-old could set up a blockbuster clash later during the tournament if both he and Novak Djokovic reach the quarterfinals.
