Novak Djokovic’s decision to part ways with his former rival and coach, Andy Murray, took many tennis lovers by surprise. Their partnership was expected to continue at least until the Wimbledon Championship but was unexpectedly cut short. Tennis legend Boris Becker admitted that their collaboration ending weeks before the Roland Garros caught him unaware.
Djokovic and Murray confirmed on May 13 that they had split after working together for six months. They had joined forces during the off-season, but their first tournament together was at the Australian Open.
Murray, in Djokovic’s box during the Grand Slam event, was a sight to behold on and off the court. On the court, the Serbian found his motivation and energy, beating Carlos Alcaraz to reach the semi-finals. However, a hamstring injury in the match against Alexander Zverev forced him to retire.
He returned to the tour in February but didn’t get his first victory until March at the Miami Open. There, he made a run to the final, with five dominant straight sets victories but lost the title to Jakub Mensik in the final. There were expectations he would bounce back during the clay swing, but in Monte Carlo and Madrid he failed to pick up a win.
He withdrew from the Italian Open and accepted a wildcard to the Geneva Open, where he has won three matches. During an interview with The Independent, Boris Becker revealed that he was surprised that Djokovic parted ways with Murray weeks ahead of the French Open. He added that the British legend could have helped him win the Wimbledon Championship.
I’m a little bit surprised that they would end their working relationship just a week before Roland Garros. I thought Melbourne was a big success. I was happy to see Andy back in action in Novak’s corner. I really wanted to see them both at Wimbledon, actually. Andy knows a thing or two about winning Wimbledon, he’s very popular there. I thought it would be an advantage for Novak to have Andy in his corner. I’m a little bit lost for words [as to] why they’ve broken up just before the second Grand Slam.
Becker understands Djokovic, having coached the Serbian legend between 2014 and 2016. During that time, the German coach helped the 38-year-old win six majors and 14 ATP Masters 1000 tournaments.
Boris Becker warns that Novak Djokovic cannot be underestimated ahead of the Roland Garros
Novak Djokovic is currently competing at the ATP 250 tournament in Geneva. The Serbian defeated Matteo Arnaldi on Thursday (May 23) to reach his third semi-finals of the season. He also earned his revenge against the Italian, who he lost to at the Madrid Open. Djokovic now has a shot to his first title of the season.

However, the ATP 250 tournament is set to be a preparation for the French Open. Djokovic had to accept a wildcard into the event after a winless run on clay. Boris Becker said during the aforementioned interview that it is hard to write off Djokovic despite his split with Andy Murray.
But you should never underestimate Novak Djokovic, he’s always a very fierce competitor, he always has something up his sleeve. Novak Djokovic knows pretty much everything about tennis. So, who can he talk to that knows more? The challenge is for Novak to find someone that he has respect [for], who he can learn something from.
Djokovic faced Cameron Norrie in the semi-finals of the Geneva Open. The Serbian was the favorite to win the match and held a 4-0 lead in their head-to-head record. He will now face Hubert Hurkacz in the final.
