Boris Becker has come under huge criticism for his cryptic message about Emma Raducanu on social media. The tennis legend replied to a post that praised Raducanu for reaching her fifth career semi-final on tour at the Transylvania Open in Cluj, where she eventually ended as a runner-up.
Raducanu had a hugely impressive week in Cluj at the Transylvania Open, where she reached the final. The British No.1 reached just her second tour-level final on tour and her first since winning the US Open in 2021. Raducanu, who was the top seed in Cluj, won her first three matches without dropping a set.
She dropped her first set against Ukrainian star Oleksandra Oliynykova, who made a name for herself at the Australian Open. However, Raducanu found a way to beat Oliynykova and faced home favorite Sorana Cirstea in the final. Despite being the favorite to win the tournament, Raducanu fell to the Romanian star in straight sets.
Nonetheless, after Raducanu defeated Maja Chwalinska 6-0, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals, a renowned journalist on X, Jose Morgado, praised the British star for having a good week at the tournament, while pointing out that it was her fifth career tour-level semi-final. Becker then reacted, “That’s it?“

Becker was slammed by fans on X for his reaction. Also, pundits from The Tennis Podcast jumped to Raducanu’s defence. Renowned British pundit Catherine Whitaker admitted that she was baffled after seeing Becker criticize Raducanu. She added that the tennis legend’s reaction shows the pathetic opinion he has about Raducanu:
It was just the perfect example of how Emma Raducanu brings out the petty and pathetic in so many people. Like, why are you out here having a mean-spirited opinion about Emma Raducanu and putting it out into the universe? Like, I don’t know what it is about her that brings that out in people, but it is a fact that she does, whether it’s Boris Becker or Man in Pub or Taxi Driver or, you know, whoever it is.
After the WTA 250 tournament in Cluj, Raducanu flew to Doha to participate in the WTA 1000 tournament in Qatar. There, she was forced to retire in the third set against Camila Osorio. During the match, she had her blood pressure taken and also revealed that she wasn’t at her best fitness level before taking the court.
Emma Raducanu advised on her strategy of hiring and firing coaches
Emma Raducanu has hugely criticized for changing coaches in her career. Recently, she parted ways with Rafael Nadal’s ex-coach, Francisco Roig, just after six months working together. She has worked with eight coaches since 2021. Andrew Richardson was her coach when she claimed her maiden Grand Slam at the 2021 US Open.

Last year, she had three different coaches, and she’s now seeking her ninth coach on tour since 2021. During the aforementioned conversation, tennis pundit Matt Roberts revealed that Raducanu’s strategy of hiring and firing coaches has stopped her from performing her best on the court:
But I think you can have legitimate questions about the way she has sort of hired and fired coaches since then, because, you know, that strategy has sort of stopped being quite so beneficial for her. But other than that, I don’t really get the huge level of criticism that Emma Raducanu gets, and it does feel hugely outsized and not in proportion with the career that she’s trying to develop for herself.
Raducanu will hope that she gets fit for the Dubai Tennis Championships after retiring from her opening match at the Doha Open. The 23-year-old holds a 5-3 win-loss record this season and will be looking forward to improving on that as the season progresses.
