“Every Russian representative needs to be sanctioned”- The Klitschko brothers call for a hold on Dmitry Bivol vs Canelo Alvarez

The Russian light heavyweight boxer Dmitry Bivol is scheduled to fight Canelo Alvarez, boxing’s pound for pound king, on May 7. Ahead of the fight Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko, brother called for the cancellation of the bout.

Vitali is a former heavyweight champion and the current Mayor of Kyiv, Ukraine and Wladimir is a former heavyweight champion. Both men immediately signed up for the Ukrainian army as the war with Russia began. The Klitschko brothers aren’t the only boxers who have joined the fight for freedom as Vasyl Lomachenko and Oleksandr Usyk fight alongside them. A number of Russian athletes have already been sanctioned, the biggest of which is the Russian football team being kicked out of the World Cup.

The Klitschko brothers feel that all Russian athletes must be stopped from competing in events as this is a way to add pressure on Russia. Wladimir said, “It is important that this boxer is forbidden from fighting in America, just as all Russian athletes are being banned from international events.” Wladimir is of the opinion, “It’s nothing against the athletes, it’s about the politics of Russia”, his brother Vitali echoed this sentiment saying “This is not against the individual sportsman but Ukraine needs the world to apply every pressure on Russia.”
