Gervonta “Tank” Davis is among the best boxers in the lighter-weight classes. Standing at 5 ft 5+1⁄2 inches, Tank has destroyed everyone in his path. Of his 29 fights, 27 have come by way of knockout. The punching power of Tank remains one of the best in the lower weight classes. In such a dominant career, he has only faced adversity once. There has only been one boxer who could “knock down” Gervonta Davis. He is Leo Santa Cruz.

It was not ruled a knockout as the referee believes that Davis slipped amidst a flurry of punches from his opponent. However, he ate punches from Santa Cruz in their bout in 2020, which led to most fans feeling that it was a knockdown. The first round started with boxers actively trying to land knockout shots to end the fight. However, towards the end of the first round, Cruz leaped forward, landing shots that made Tank slip and fall.

Tank put pressure on Cruz in the second round, landing significant shots to win the second round. The two boxers traded back and forth until the sixth round when Tank started to get the better of Cruz. The body shots that Tank utilized started to pay dividends for him, and Cruz started to slow down. He ended the fight in the sixth round with a devastating left uppercut that knocked Cruz out cold. This displayed Tank’s knockout power yet again as Cruz could not get back to his feet.

After his knockout loss to Davis, he has only fought once more. He last fought in 2022 against Keenan Carbajal. He won the fight by unanimous decision, being the more active boxer during the fight. Cruz has held the WBA ‘Super’ Featherweight title since 2017 but has not defended it in a long time. Looking at the long gap between title defenses, WBA asked Cruz to defend or vacate. He was supposed to fight Leigh Wood, the secondary title holder, in 2022.

Since then, the fight has not happened due to both parties having problems with negotiation regarding the fight purse. Both boxers held out for more money, which ended with the fight being canceled and Santa Cruz vacating his title in December 2022. After vacating the title, secondary title holder Leigh Wood was promoted to the Undisputed Champion. Currently, Santa Cruz remains without an opponent for his next fight.
