Cus D’Amato and Mike Tyson had a substantial and enduring friendship. When Tyson was a troubled teen, Cus D’Amato found him and took him under his wing. D’Amato assumed the roles of Tyson’s legal guardian, trainer, and father. He was essential to Tyson’s growth both as a boxer and as a person.
Under D’Amato’s guidance, Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion in boxing history. Their relationship was a close and strong one, with D’Amato providing not only boxing training but also life lessons and guidance to Tyson. Unfortunately, D’Amato passed away in 1985, but his influence on Tyson’s career and life continued to shape the boxer’s path in the years that followed.
During his teen days, Tyson had a troubled life and he often speaks about how D’Amato taught him how to control his anger and direct it towards boxing. In one interview, Tyson mentioned how he never feared anybody bullying him.
He said, “Once I talked to cus and cus talked to me. Over and over again, every night for hours. When I was a young, when I was 13 and 14. I just never had to worry about nobody ever bullying me again. I knew that would never happen again, cause I knew back then, I will f***** kill them if they f**** with me.”
Tyson claimed that in his early teens, nobody had the courage to bully him and he wasn’t scared after he learned boxing. According to Tyson, he would have killed anybody who would have tried to do that.
Mike Tyson felt helpless when he was once bullied for meatballs
Before learning boxing and becoming a danger in his teenage years, Mike Tyson was a scared kid who often got bullied. In an interview, Tyson recounted the tale about meatballs and getting bullied.

According to him, he still felt like a coward because of the bullying on that unfortunate day. Tyson, who didn’t have much money, found himself in a situation where the other guy wanted his meatballs. The seven-year-old Tyson resisted but ended up being beaten by his aggressor.
Despite lacking the strength and courage to fight back, Mike mentioned that he hunched over like a human shield and fiercely protected his meatballs, which he was planning to bring home. He would allow bullies to take his money, but he never allowed them to take his food. In his own words, he explained, “I was hunched over like a human shield, protecting my meatballs.”
That incident left a deep impact on Tyson’s life, and it continues to haunt him to this day. He often reflects on that moment when he ran home, leaving his meatballs behind. To this day, Tyson carries the weight of feeling like a coward due to the bullying he endured.
