George Kambosos, after months of hype, came out with the worst outcome a champion could have in a title defense in his backyard against 23-year-old American lightweight Devin Haney. Kambosos came up short for what seemed like all 12 rounds in his bout at the Marvel Stadium in Melbourne Australia.

Kambosos who had beat Teofimo Lopez to gain the WBO, IBF, WBA and The Ring Lightweight Championship of the world. Lopez himself was making his first defense against George Kambosos as he came up short in the 12-round fight. Haney, who was fighting outside the North American continent for the first time managed to become the undisputed lightweight champion of the world at the young age of 23. He managed to leave almost 40000 Aussie fans speechless as he displayed a superior mastery in the sweet science for all twelve rounds.

Kambosos has a rematch clause that he can exercise against Haney

Even before the fight took place Kambosos was involved in a weigh-in controversy when he came in overweight at 135.36lb., 0.36 lbs above the lightweight limit of 135 lbs. George had almost 2 hours to make weight, which he did, ultimately claiming the initial weight miss was a part of drama and theatrics. He said,” Changes nothing. It changes his mindset now. Trust me. Art of war. Deception,” However he couldn’yt have been more wrong as the American came in unfazed and put a masterclass on the champion.

While most fans had forgotten about the weigh-in drama due to Haney’s performance, someone who didn’t was former IBF Super middleweight champion, Caleb Plant. The 21-1 boxer, sarcastically took aim at the lightweight on twitter saying, “Just reported that Georgie lost on purpose in attempts to deceive Devin” referring to Kambosos’ earlier statements about missing weight on purpose. He then topped it off with what the Australian said after theincident saying,”All about deception, that’s the Art Of War”

Kambosos does have a rematch clause with Haney, which is scheduled to take place in Australia itself but after George’s perfomance tonight many fans are doubtful if the event will do better financially in Kambosos’ home country of Haney’s Backyard in America.
