Canelo Alvarez hits back at Oscar De La Hoya for criticising him for spending time playing golf ahead of Dmitry Bivol clash
Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya
Canelo Alvarez has responded to Oscar De La Hoya about his statement about Canelo’s loss. Canelo is currently the biggest star in boxing and is also the Pound-for-Pound number one fighter in boxing. Oscar De La Hoya was Canelo’s former promoter and is the founder of Golden Boy Promotions. Both parted way after Canelo’s contract dispute with Golder Boy Promotions and DAZN.
Canelo’s current promoter is Eddie Hearn and Canelo has been rising in the world of boxing since he left Oscar’s promotion. Canelo currently holds the IBF, WBA, WBC, WBO and The Ring Supper middleweight title. After winning these titles, Canelo made a bold move to move up a weight class and fight the WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol. The move, however, turned out to be a bad one for Canelo as Bivol outmatched Canelo in their boxing match and won the fight via unanimous decision.
Oscar was quick to criticize Canelo for his loss against Bivol and claimed that he was playing too much golf instead of focusing on boxing. Oscar said: “What I saw, and I see everything, Canelo has been playing a lot of golf. From experience, I used to play a lot of golf in between fights and in between training camps. It takes a lot out of you. Yeah, you’re out there for six hours. You’re standing, your legs are weak, and you’re focused. A fighter needs to be focused.”
Canelo responded to Oscar’s criticism and said that it’s not wrong to play other sports as well. Canelo said:” I think it’s better to have a love for another sport than other things, don’t you think?”

“Best at 168”- Oscar De La Hoya takes hit at Canelo Alvarez and claims David Benavidez is the best fighter at 168 pounds
Oscar De La Hoya has made a bold statement targeting Canelo Alvarez. Oscar has claimed David Benavidez is the best 168 pound boxer in the world right now. David Benavidez outmatched David Lemieux to become the WBC interim super-middleweight title. The fight was a one-sided contest, and it ended in the third round with Benavidez winning via TKO.
With the win, Benavidez has extended his record to 26-0 with 23 knockouts. Oscar, in his tweet, congratulated Benavidez and called him the best 168 pound boxer, disregarding Canelo Alvarez. Oscar’s claim about Benavidez being the best middleweight means a lot. Canelo Alvarez was once De La Hoya’s flagship fighter in his Golden Boy Promotions. However, he now seems interested in 25 years old David Benavidez.
In his recent tweet, Oscar said: “Benavides the best at 168 congratulations”
Benavides becoming the interim title holder has now given another opponent to Canelo, who is already looking for a rematch with Dmitry Bivol and a match with Gennady Golovkin in September 2022.
