Mexican fighter and Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion Canelo Alvarez has his eyes set on Jermell Charlo. While boxing fans do like the matchup, they have made it clear that they want Alvarez to fight young fighter David Benavidez. Many even believe that Canelo was ducking ‘The Mexican Monster.’ However, Alvarez has finally made his stance clear on the Benavidez fight .
After his win over John Ryder, Canelo Alvarez began pushing for his rematch against Dmitry Bivol. Bivol is the second person to hand Canelo a loss. Therefore, the Mexican fighter wanted to level things with the Russian fighter. Alvarez wanted to pursue the rematch under the same terms and conditions as his last bout at 175 lbs. However, Bivol wanted to contest for Canelo’s belts at 168lbs which was not Canelo’s plan.
With plans of a rematch being scrapped from Alvarez’s list, the names of several fighters started to emerge. He made offers to Badou Jack and Jermall Charlo for his next bout. However, both fighters rejected the offer and Alvarez settled on fighting Jermell Charlo instead.
With many fans unhappy with Canelo’s matchmaking choice, they claimed that he was ducking David Benavidez. Besides, many people also said that ‘The Mexican Monster’ was a better fighter and that Canelo was past his prime. With such rumors circulating, Alvarez made his stance clear on the Benavidez fight when questioned by a reporter.
“Yeah, why not? Maybe in the future. He talks too much, that’s not the way to make a fight. I don’t pay attention. I do my thing. Just watch, watch my career, watch his career. I’ve done a lot in boxing,” said Alvarez. With that said Canelo will have to take care of Jermell Charlo first if he ever wants to pursue a fight with David Benavidez.
Oscar De La Hoya says Canelo Alvarez gains nothing from his fight with Jermell Charlo

Undisputed Super Middleweight Fighter Canelo Alvarez will soon go head-to-head with Jermell Charlo. The Mexican fighter was previously supposed to fight, middleweight champion Jermall Charlo. However, due to personal issues on Jermall’s side, Alvarez will now fight his twin. Unlike Jermall, Jermell will have to climb two weight classes for the bout. With Charlo being the undisputed champion in the light middleweight division several question Canelo’s matchmaking choice.
Alvarez’s former promoter and boxing icon Oscar De La Hoya also gave his opinions on Canelo’s next bout. According to De La Hoya, a win against Jermell Charlo won’t help him with his rankings. The Golden Boy Promotions founder believes his bout against Charlo will serve as a tune-up fight.
If Alvarez manages to win his bout he will fight tougher opponents. “It’s almost kind of like an alright, let me win this fight and sharpen up my tools. So then I can face Benavidez or I can face the tougher guys. I just think that it’s not a win-win for Canelo. That’s it,” said De La Hoya.
The bout between Canelo Alvarez and Jermell Charlo will take place on September 30 in Vegas and available for PPV on Showtime.
