Before John Ryder fought Jamie Munguia on January 27, 2024, David Benavidez‘s father stated that the Mexican Monster would fight Ryder if he won. Furthermore, Benavidez Sr. had announced that he would otherwise move up to the light-heavyweight division. Hence, after Munguia defeated Ryder, it became clear that Benavidez would now move up in weight to fight boxers like Dmitry Bivol or Artur Beterbiev. Subsequently, Benavidez will be moving up in weight because he has not been able to secure a fight against Canelo Alvarez for years.

As such, Alvarez officially announced that he would be fighting in May and reports suggested it would be Jermall Charlo. However, fans didn’t want to see this fight, and the PBC offered Canelo Alvarez a $35 million fight deal to fight Munguia instead of Charlo. Furthermore, Al Haymon’s PBC has now offered an even bigger deal for his next fight, which is expected in May. Boxing journalist Michael Benson reported the news, stating:

David Benavidez’s promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz, has declared that Al Haymon’s PBC has now offered Canelo Alvarez a guaranteed purse of $55 million to fight Benavidez next.

Hence, the PBC initially offered Alvarez a $35 million fight deal to fight Munguia instead of Charlo because the fight would sell better. Simultaneously, the PBC has also offered Alvarez a $55 million fight deal to fight Benavidez.

This difference in the fighter’s purse reflects how much the fight against Benavidez is being demanded among boxing fans. Furthermore, Alvarez’s team has not decided or confirmed which fight deal they will be moving forward with until now.

David Benavidez moves up to the light-heavyweight division

The fight between Benavidez and Alvarez is one of the most demanded fights in boxing currently. Subsequently, many people feel that Alvarez has been avoiding this fight for several years now. Hence, Benavidez has been calling out Alvarez for a fight to cement his legacy by defeating the Mexican boxing star.

However, it now appears that Benavidez is ready to move on and cement his boxing legacy differently. As such, Benavid plans to move up to the 175-pound division if the fight against Alvarez does not materialize. Furthermore, his contingency opponent is said to be Oleksandr Gvozdyk, who has a record of 20-1 with 16 KOs.

In addition, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed this fight and stated that the WBC has sanctioned it. Subsequently, Sulaiman stated that Benavidez and Gvozdyk would be fighting for the interim light heavyweight championship.
