Chris Eubank Sr. once almost took his life while fighting inside the ring and even prevented his son from doing the same. Furthermore, his son, Chris Eubank Jr., fought Chris Blackwell on March 26 at Wembley Arena. In the early rounds, Blackwell could keep up with Eubank Jr., but gradually, Blackwell began to wear down. Additionally, Eubank Jr. managed to land several blows on Blackwell skillfully and kept trying to get a stoppage or KO. Deaths in combat sports arise due to unwanted punishments.
Blackwell took the punishment, remained standing until the 10th round, and even attempted to fight back. Witnessing the fight from the ringside, Chris Eubank Sr. slipped inside the ring during the corner break. Subsequently, he instructed Eubank Jr. to take it easy because they had already won via decision. After the fight, Eubank Sr. revealed what he told his son:
Even in sparring, I tell Junior to stay away from the head because his punching is fast, powerful and dangerous. So most certainly I was saying this to protect the fighter.Chris Eubank via ESPN
Hence, Eubank Jr. wanted an easier approach on Blackwell after this and was not delivering punishing shots anymore. Furthermore, it was observed that Eubank Jr. kept attempting to land body shots instead of hitting Blackwell in the head. Subsequently, this allowed Blackwell to avoid everlasting damage even though he had to retire due to brain damage.
As such, Eubank Sr. did this because he once fought Michael Watson in 1991 and gave him a similar beatdown. Subsequently, Watson received brain damage after the fight and is lucky to have not lost his life or become paralyzed. Such an instance in his career made him tell his son to go easy on an opponent.
Chris Blackwell’s condition after the fight
In the 10th round, Blackwell had a swollen left eye and had received a lot of damage to his ribs and chin. This prompted the doctor to intervene and stop the fight, and Blackwell did not protest this. A few minutes after the fight, Blackwell collapsed inside the ring because of bleeding inside the skull and outside the brain.
Subsequently, Blackwell was rushed to the hospital and was put into a medically induced coma for seven days. Blackwell came out of the coma and, after a few months, took part in a sparring session, though he was medically advised not to. This sparring session again put Blackwll’s life at immense risk, and he almost became paralyzed or could have lost his life.
However, Blackwell proved to be a warrior, emerged from a coma for the second time, and escaped death twice. Furthermore, Blackwell began his journey to Cornwall and gradually became able to walk and live a normal life.
