Before Dana White successfully brought the UFC to the limelight, he spent several years making his dream a reality. However, many people do not know that before that, White wanted to follow in the footsteps of Mike Tyson. Furthermore, White wanted to become a professional boxer and juggled multiple jobs before shifting to Las Vegas.
In an interview with BigBoyTV, White spoke about his time in the 90s when boxing was still at its Peak. White said, “There were a couple of big boxing gyms here in town that were popping at the time, and I ended up at a place called United Champions.” At the United Champions gym, White was one of the three principals, where he met many prominent fighters. Furthermore, White said, “That’s how I ended up connecting with Floyd. That’s how Floyd and I first met each other.”
One of the other three lead members of the gym was Roger Mayweather, White’s good friend. Roger was an American former boxer who won the WBO, WBC, and IBO titles. Subsequently, Jeff Mayweather was Roger’s brother, making Floyd Mayweather his nephew.
Hence, when Floyd was 18, he would train with his uncle Roger at the United Champions gym. Furthermore, this is how White met Floyd before he even started his boxing career. The duo would collaborate two decades later when Conor McGregor represented Dana White led-UFC against Mayweather in a boxing match.
Dana White once warned Floyd Mayweather not to confront Conor McGregor
After he’d made history as the first UFC two-division champ, “The Notorious” challenged Mayweather to a blockbuster boxing fight. Both fighters demonstrated their marketing acumen by engaging in a verbal altercation.
Floyd Mayweather went so far as to threaten to hit the Irishman if he ever crossed paths with him on the street. The UFC president intervened to warn Mayweather of the repercussions of bumping into McGregor on the street. Furthermore, White stated that McGregor could easily beat up Mayweather and all of his security, and Mayweather knew that.
On the other hand, Mayweather was an undefeated fighter and a champion, so he wasn’t afraid of The Notorious. Hence, this is why he probably did not hesitate to threaten McGregor. The duo headlined the biggest combat sports event in history.
