It was widely anticipated that Deontay Wilder would defeat Joseph Parker on the day of the reckoning boxing card. Subsequently, it would have paved the way for a potential mega-fight against Anthony Joshua in 2024. Furthermore, Eddie Hearn had already announced that if both of them won their respective bouts, they would fight in March 2024. However, this plan went down the drain after Wilder gave an underwhelming performance against Parker.
Subsequently, after his loss, Wilder gave several reasons for his underwhelming performance. As such, Wilder mentioned that Parker was not an impressive fighter and that he had anticipated his shots. However, Deontay Wilder bizarrely claimed that he zoned out in the fight, which caused him to get hit. Similarly, Wilder has now provided more excuses by stating:
I had to travel two times, 20 hours of traveling. And those guys were already in Europe; they were only 2/3 hours away. I'm not complaining; I'm just saying what I had to go through.Deontay Wilder via Seckbach
In addition, Wilder called the bout a boring fight and stated that nothing significant happened. Furthermore, Wilder mentioned that he went back to training the next day and that Parker didn’t do any serious damage to him.
Subsequently, Wilder mentioned that he had to travel 20 hours to reach Saudi Arabia and added that Parker only had to travel 3–4 hours. As such, Wilder tried to suggest that the jet lag caused by traveling so much affected his performance inside the ring.
Deontay Wilder’s next potential fight
Unfortunately for Wilder, most of the best heavyweights are already scheduled to fight. This includes Joshua, who was initially supposed to fight Wilder in March. However, after Wilder’s loss, Joshua will now be facing Francis Ngannou on March 8.
Similarly, Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk were set for their undisputed clash, but it got postponed after Fury got injured. Subsequently, Wilder boldly stated that he could instead fight Usyk and replace Fury for the fight. But, this is highly unlikely since the Fury vs. Usyk fight got rescheduled and will happen on May 18. Hence, Wilder may have to fight a boxer who isn’t that popular if he wants to get back into the ring.
In addition, Andy Ruiz has also shown some interest in fighting Wilder, but The Bronze Bomber has not commented on this yet. Regardless, Wilder is now continuing to train until his opponent for his next fight gets fixed.
In case you missed it!
