On April 20th, Devin Haney is set to take on Ryan Garcia at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. However, it may be his last bout on a date like this. This is because Haney is a devout Muslim who celebrates the holy month of Ramadan and follows all the rules. The rules include having to fast from dawn to dusk, which can be really tough for a boxer. This can be even harder if a boxer has a training camp for an upcoming fight.
Hence, Haney has to adjust in this matter since he is a dedicated boxer and a devout Muslim. As such, he is not able to do the 16-hour fasting that happens every day for a month. So, to make the fans aware of his situation, the California-bred boxer took to social media to share his decision with everyone. Haney stated on social media:
Allah knows my intentions, but this will be the last fight that I’m in training during Ramadan.Devin Haney via X
This is not the first time that Haney could not partake in the fasting of Ramadan since he has had fights during this month in the past. Furthermore, the boxer believes that God is aware of his intentions and also his dedication to the faith.
However, Haney announced that he does not plan on fighting around Ramadan in the future. This will help Devin Haney practice his religious beliefs without affecting his career.
Devin Haney belives Canelo Alvarez’s time is over
Haney has emerged as a top boxer with an undefeated record of 31-0 with 15 KOs and has now become a two-division world champion. Subsequently, after Floyd Mayweather retired, many people regarded Canelo Alvarez as one of the faces of boxing. However, Haney believes that Alvarez’s time at the top is now coming to an end.
Haney said that Alvarez has done a lot for the sport but has reached a certain dead-end point in his career. In addition, the younger boxer stated that Alvarez is only taking fights that he wants to do. However, ‘The Dream’ stated that he is the guy who is taking tests and proving himself as a top boxer.
The Dream also believes his fight with Ryan Garcia will be much bigger than Alvarez’s fight against Jaime Munguia. Hence, while Haney did not try to disrespect Alvarez, he believes that it is now his time to reign at the top.
In case you missed it!
