Devin Haney created history as he took on the undisputed lightweight champion of the world, George Kambosos Jr. on the enemy’s ground and earned a dominant victory to take the throne as the lightweight king. It was never going to be an easy task for Devin as he traveled across the globe to challenge George for the WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO & Rig titles.
Haney was faced with several setbacks leading up to the fight. Devin signed with a new promoter, took a pay cut, traveled across the globe to Australia without his trainer, and also fought in front of 40,000 people who were rooting against him. Despite all the odds, Haney turned out to be victorious and crowned the new undisputed lightweight champ.
The fight took place at the Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia. He was booed throughout the fight but the 23-year-old had a mentality of a true champion. The judges scored the card, (118-110, 116-112, 116-112) for Haney.
“I handicapped him” Devin Haney in the post-fight press conference
“This is a dream come true. We both dreamed of this. I was just sticking to the game plan,” said Haney in the post-fight ring interview. “I took the last round off because I knew I was comfortably ahead but I fought a good, smart fight. I handicapped him of his best things, he wanted to land an overhand right hand and a big left hook.”
Devin showed a proper display of fighting and also praised George for his warrior-like mindset. “I take my hat off to him. he’s a true warrior. Even though he got disrespectful, I stayed a gentleman and professional,” said the Oakland native. “A lot of these so-called champions wouldn’t give me my shot but George was a true champion.”
When George became the undisputed champion, Teofimo Lopez stole his moment by taking over the mic, but Kambosos let Devin enjoy his moment and showed signs of sportsmanship.
