Devin Haney is fresh off a stunning unanimous decision win over Regis Prograis to take home the WBC super-lightweight title. The fight was Haney’s official debut in the 140-pound division after relinquishing his lightweight titles. However, ‘The Dream’ came under heavy fire from boxing fans for his weight advantage in his most recent fight. However, Haney has fired back at these claims and blamed the tragedies in boxing on poor weight-cutting techniques.

Even though Haney moved up in weight for this fight, various reports indicate that there was a significant difference in weight on fight night. At 165 pounds, Haney held a significant lead over Prograis, who weighed in at 156.8 pounds on the day of their fight. However, both fighters were within the 140-pound limit at the official weigh-in a day before the fight.

Subsequently, Devin Haney weighed 8.2 pounds more than Prograis. Speaking on the controversy in an interview with MMA Hour, Haney stated:

That's where guys go wrong, you know they are not rehydrating up. I hate to say it, but that's why they’re dying in the ring and stuff like that because the brain is not hydrated.

Haney stated that his 25-pound difference compared to his weigh-in weight was because of the consumption of water. Furthermore, Haney stated that you cannot gain that much weight in one day by just eating food.

Subsequently, Haney went into the importance of rehydrating properly after the weigh-in and before the fight. In addition, Haney stated that most deaths inside the ring are caused by fighters being dehydrated and not getting enough oxygen to the brain.

Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia are negotiating a fight

After his dominant victory over Prograis, Haney has been calling out Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia. Hence, Haney’s next opponent is expected to be one of the most well-known names in the sport of boxing. Furthermore, Haney called out Davis, and they had a back-and-forth on Twitter, most of which was deleted by Davis.

Subsequently, Haney announced that Davis was not interested in the fight and was ducking. In addition, Haney mentioned how he has achieved everything in the lightweight division and decided to move on to the super-lightweight division because Davis avoids fighting him. Similarly, after Haney’s victory, Garcia congratulated him for his performance but stated that he was not impressed.

This led to the young fighters engaging in talks about potentially fighting in 2024. However, unlike Davis, Garcia is not backing down or deleting his tweets, and he seems serious. Hence, it can be assumed that if their negotiations go successfully, Garcia and Haney will fight in 2024.
