The champion and the challenger met at the MGM Grand Garden Arena for their final face-off. Devin Haney and Vasiliy Lomachenko will compete for the undisputed lightweight title. The weigh-in started in a cool environment, but the face-off surprised everyone.
After the ceremonial weigh-in, Devin Haney shoved Loma for no reason. The Ukrainian traveled back some distance before the security caught him from falling. Fans speculated that Haney waited a long time to fight Loma and decided to play one final mind trick before their bout. Haney has talked plenty of trash-talk against Loma, including racially insensitive comments.
The 24-year-old Haney has an undefeated record of 30-0. The shove only added excitement to the lightweight title fight. Securities are always involved in a face-off to de-escalate a heated moment like this on stage. However, Vasiliy Lomachenko kept his composure as he smiled back and remained calm. After finishing up his part, the champion looked not too worried about the consequences.
When Devin Haney was interviewed for his bully-like act, he confidently addressed the shove. Haney said, “That was just the start. You see how easily I pushed him? He’s the smaller man, and I’m going to impose my will on him.” Lomachenko is the most challenging opponent of Haney’s career. Lomachenko had amateur boxing of 396 wins and a single loss. The Ukrainian-born boxer joked that he truly understood Haney’s power. Loma said, “He doesn’t have the power… He’s scared. I see right now, and 100%.” Most boxing fans and analysts believe that Haney does not possess the power to knock out Lomachenko.
Lomachenko is getting older and the fight against Haney could be the last time he fights for an undisputed title in his career. Lomachenko always aspired to become an undisputed champion in boxing. However, he will need to defeat Haney to fulfill his destiny.
