The world of boxing was taken aback by Ryan Garcia’s recent decision to not fight Devin Haney. Garcia took to social media on Saturday to announce that he won’t be fighting Haney for the WBC Super Lightweight title. Subsequently, Garcia announced that he would now focus on a fight with WBA Super Lightweight Champion Rolando Romero

Garcia recently made a comeback against Oscar Duarte after suffering his first professional loss against Gervonta Davis. After knocking out Duarte in the eighth round, Garcia announced his intent to fight Romero. However, after Haney became the WBC super lightweight champion, Garcia and Haney began to discuss a fight. Garcia has now decided to fight Romero instead after claiming that it is the bigger fight and that Haney’s last fight had low PPV numbers. This triggered Haney, who responded by stating:

Don't ever mention my name, pu**y boi.

After Garcia announced that he wouldn’t be fighting Haney next, Haney responded by throwing shade at him. Garcia’s main stance is that Haney’s last fight against Regis Prograis only secured 50k PPV on DAZN. Hence, Garcia decided to call out Romero again and dropped the idea of fighting Haney for now.

Furthermore, Garcia again responded to Haney’s tweet, where Haney called him a pu**sy, and retorted that Haney would be back. Subsequently, Garcia wrote another tweet where he mentioned that Haney needs him for a bigger fight since he can’t be sure of big PPV numbers. In addition, Garcia stated that once he deals with Romero, his fight with Haney will be even bigger.

Fans react to Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney’s verbal back-and-forth

Initially, when Garcia and Haney announced that they were in negotiations, fans were extremely excited. The fight would have been their first professional fight, but it would have been the seventh time they entered the ring together. Haney and Garcia were rivals in their amateur boxing days and had 3 wins each from 6 fights.

Hence, this mega-fight fight would have settled an old score between them. However, Garcia has decided that fighting Romero will be a more lucrative option for him and will be better for his fight with Haney, eventually.

Fans trolled Haney for acting like a tough guy and talking like a gangster and found it cringeworthy. Furthermore, several fans feel that Garcia is ducking Haney now because of fear or because Floyd Mayweather told him to. In addition, many agreed that Garcia’s decision is the best course of action and will make the Haney vs. Garcia fight bigger in the future.
