It looks like the worst is yet to come for Dominican Republic boxer Edwin De Los Santos. The 26-year-old was coming off a controversial loss to Shakur Stevenson, which was widely regarded as one of the dullest fights in boxing history. As per reports, Edwin’s boxer brother, Jose Luis de Los Santos, along with several others, was involved in a car accident. Subsequently, the accident took place on February 4th killing two people and injuring several others.
The fight, which took place in November of last year between Edwin and Shakur Stevenson, was notable for having one of the lowest punch counts. The most vocal criticism of the fight was directed at Stevenson, who was the more popular of the two fighters. Subsequently, the undefeated fighter dove and evaded, attempting to avoid engaging De Los Santos in the fight. More than two months later, the Spaniard has more bad news to deal with.
Broadway Joel, who is known for being the voice for Dominican boxing, provided the grim news on the social media platform X. Furthermore, he stated that boxers from the National Dominican Boxing Team were traveling from San Cristobal to Santo Domingo and got involved in an unfortunate car accident. In addition, American Gold Medalist, Cristian Pinales and José Luis, Edwin’s brother, were also in the car.
However, Jose came out relatively unscathed, and Pinales had several abrasions to his face and neck. Similarly, one of the assistant trainers broke his hand, and two other people present in the car passed away.
Bob Arum talks about Shakur Stevenson vs. Edwin De Los Santos
The 12-round PPV event between Stevenson and De Los Santos was one of the most laconic fights. Stevenson won by unanimous decision, and everyone who saw the fight didn’t have a problem with that. However, people had issues with the lack of action throughout the fight, which made it quite boring from the perspective of the fans.
According to Bob Arum, the reason Stevenson vs. De Los Santos wasn’t interesting was because Stevenson had an injury. Furthermore, Arum revealed that he was seeing doctors for a shoulder injury before the fight. Arum views this as the reason why Stevenson fought very cautiously and avoided getting into a nasty brawl.
The fight set an official record for the least number of punches thrown in a boxing match. Subsequently, in a post-match interview, Stevenson apologized to the fans for his poor performance. A few months after the fight, Stevenson announced his retirement at the age of just 26 years old.
