Canelo Alvarez will take on John Ryder in his upcoming boxing bout. Ryder intends to become the third fighter to defeat Canelo inside the boxing ring. However, before the fight week, Forbes released the list of highest-paid athletes in 2023. Canelo Alvarez remains the only boxer on the prestigious list. Moreover, he remains the only combat sports athlete on the list.
He joins the list with Footballers like Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Kylian Mbappe, who nabbed the top three positions. Lebron James is fourth on the list, and Canelo completes the top five. Combat sport athletes getting on the Forbes list remain a monumental achievement. In 2021, UFC superstar Conor McGregor remained the only fighter on the list. However, after missing 2022, McGregor loses his spot on the list.
With his place on the Forbes list, Canelo Alvarez once again proved he is the real ‘face of boxing.’ Recently, Gervonta Davis stated that he became the ‘face of boxing’ after his victory over Ryan Garcia. Davis utilized heavy body shots to compromise Garcia’s body. In the seventh round, he dropped Garcia with a body punch. Garcia did not get back up, and the referee declared Davis the winner.
However, despite Davis claiming he is the new ‘face of boxing,’ evidence proves that the title still belongs to Canelo. Canelo has been boxing’s highest earner since Floyd Mayweather retired in 2017. PPV’s buy rate of Canelo’s fights remains impressive. It is the reason why Canelo makes the top half of the list.
