“Too many world champions”- Floyd Mayweather questions the history of boxing as a sport

Floyd Mayweather

Floyd Mayweather has once again pointed out a major problem he thinks is existing in the modern boxing era. Floyd is clearly not a fan of having too many titles in boxing, and his statements have confirmed it many times. Boxing has a large amount of titles across the weight division. Belts are currently awarded by the WBA, WBO, IBF and WBC, and Mayweather is not happy with the current system.

Floyd has ranted about the issue various times and has criticised a multiple number of world titles and the sanctioning fees that come with them. In early boxing history, there were only 8 weight classes and one championship per division, whereas in modern boxing there are 17 weight classes and four separate sanctioning bodies having their own titles.

Floyd will face Mikuru Asakura in an exhibition match soon and in the press conference, Floyd once again talked about the issue and said the main issue in boxing is having too many world champions. Floyd pointed out the fight between George Kambosos and Devin Haney and pointed out that 4 titles were on-line in the fight and that, according to him, is an issue.

Floyd Mayweather is one of the best boxers of all time and recently got inducted into the IBHOF. Despite retiring from boxing, Floyd can’t stay away from the ring. Floyd retired from professional boxing after fighting Conor McGregor in 2017 but has fought multiple times in exhibition boxing fights.

Floyd has announced that he will enter the boxing ring once again and fight the MMA fighter Mikuru Asakura as part of an upcoming RIZIN card scheduled in September. Floyd last fought in May against Don Moore in Dubai and outboxed Moore along with having fun inside the ring. The fight against Mikuru was announced on Monday during a press conference. The exact date of the event is not yet decided and will be announced soon.

Floyd is 45 years old and is still not putting his gloves down. Asakura is 29 years old and has no prior experience in boxing, but has a professional MMA record of 16 wins and 3 losses. With no prior experience in boxing, it is likely that Asakura will be dominated by Floyd Mayweather during the fight, but it will be exciting to see how Asakura fights in the biggest fight of his career.
