Floyd Mayweather made a lot of money through professional boxing. Mayweather’s first biggest fight was with then-PPV star Oscar De La Hoya. The fight with De La Hoya skyrocketed his financial ambitions. However, the animosity between Mayweather and De La Hoya had not subsided after their fight. De La Hoya became a promoter after retirement and fielded fighters to defeat Mayweather but failed.

Recently Floyd Mayweather bought 34 tickets for the Super Bowl LVIII, which amounted to almost $1.5 million. Moreover, Mayweather revealed via social media that he paid $18 million to the IRS. He also went on to state that he paid even more when he was an active professional fighter. Nonetheless, De La Hoya seemed not to believe in Mayweather’s claims as he thought they were fake. This is what De La Hoya tweeted about it.

Not to be an ass but where are the routing/tracking numbers to that check? Sorry but that’s not real haha.

De La Hoya and Mayweather have always traded jabs on social media on more than one occasion. Therefore, it was not surprising for boxing fans to see De La Hoya’s remark about Mayweather’s claims. Mayweather recently interacted with Ryan Garcia, a fighter signed with De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions. The interaction created controversy, particularly after Garcia’s negative remarks about De La Hoya and his partner Bernard Hopkins.

Mayweather wanted the fight to happen between Ryan Garcia and Rolly Romero. However, De La Hoya recently announced via X that a fight between Garcia and Devin Haney is a done deal. The fight is for April 20, 2024, and Haney will put his WBC super lightweight title on the line.

Floyd Mayweather’s fight with Oscar De La Hoya

De La Hoya’s fight with Mayweather ended in a split decision loss. Many attribute the loss to the poor game plan of the Mexican-American midway through the fight. Mayweather had trouble with the notorious jab of De La Hoya in the early rounds of the fight. However, De La Hoya stopped using it, and Mayweather cruised to victory.

Billed as ‘The World Awaits,’ the fight broke many records. After the fight, De La Hoya’s first purse of $52 million was the highest. It broke the record of Mike Tyson, who earned $35 million for his fight with Evander Holyfield. It was among the most expensive boxing fights ever put on at the time.

The fight also broke the PPV and live gate record at the time. The records stood until the fight between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao broke it. De La Hoya is now active as a promoter, whereas Mayweather is now fighting exhibition bouts.
