From working in a sand quarry as a child for money to becoming one of the biggest combat sports athletes in the world, Francis Ngannou’s journey is nothing but inspirational.
The former UFC heavyweight champion faced numerous challenges on his journey to success. Before relocating to France to pursue his dream of becoming a fighter, he encountered significant hardships. In the early stages of his professional career, he encountered a unique problem: finding willing opponents proved to be a daunting task. Many potential challengers were understandably apprehensive about stepping into the ring with him, given his formidable reputation. During a recent interview, the fighter said,
"For the most part those MMA fights were cancelled at the last minute because people didn’t want to deal with me anymore. They said I was brutal and violent. Sometimes I would be in the locker room warming up and they would cancel the fight.”
According to Ngannou, most of his MMA fights in the past were called off at the very last moment. His opponents couldn’t handle his brutality and violent way of fighting. The fighter revealed that there were instances where the fights got canceled while he was gearing up for the fight in the locker room.
Times have changed a lot and now the reigning boxing heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury, has called out Ngannou’s name for a fight due to his reputation. This matchup has stirred significant excitement among fight fans, marking a shift in the landscape of combat sports. The anticipation for this clash of champions from different disciplines is palpable, and fans are eager to witness this historic showdown.
Francis Ngannou talks about his rising popularity in the boxing community
When Francis Ngannou was dropping opponents for fun in the biggest MMA promotion in the world, nobody expected him to quit everything and box Tyson Fury someday.
Nonetheless, it appears that Ngannou’s long-standing passion for boxing is now materializing into a concrete reality as he prepares for his first-ever boxing bout. However, many fans are downplaying Ngannou, claiming that this is just a money grab for the fighter.
But Ngannou doesn’t seem to be bothered by all these, as he recently agreed that he hasn’t received much respect from the boxing community. The fighter mentioned the need to earn his own respect, as he can’t simply step out there and expect people to respect him for no reason. Ngannou is determined to fight, and if that defining moment comes, it comes. He firmly believes that anything is possible, as he never thought of fighting a heavyweight champion in the first place.
