The undisputed heavyweight clash between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk is not the only heavyweight fight to look forward to. Francis Ngannou and Anthony Joshua are now slated to fight each other in March 2024. Joshua has recently emerged victorious after a TKO victory over Otto Wallin at the Day of Recoking main event. Initially, Joshua was supposed to fight Deontay Wilder next, but Wilder lost his fight against Joseph Parker.
Hence, Ngannou was brought in as Wilder’s replacement for their March fight, and both fighters and their teams have agreed to the fight. This will be Ngannou’s second boxing match since he made his debut in October 2023 against Fury. The former UFC heavyweight champion surpassed everyone’s expectations and delivered a stellar performance. Recently, during an interview with The MMA Hour, Francis Ngannou stated:
I win this fight, I’m fighting fury, period. Whether or not he has the belt. I don’t want that political stuff with the titles. If the titles are on the line with no string attached, then yes, I'll grab it, it's good for decoration.Francis Ngannou via The MMA Hour
Hence, Ngannou proclaimed that he was still gunning at Fury after their last fight, which ended with Fury being the controversial winner. Many people believe that Ngannou had won the fight but was robbed of his victory by the judges and their decision. As such, Ngannou wishes to settle the score once and for all.
In addition, Ngannou wishes to fight Fury even if he loses his WBC title after fighting Usyk. Ngannou also stated that he doesn’t want to pursue fights to gain titles but doesn’t mind winning them. Furthermore, Ngannou mentioned that he doesn’t plan on returning to MMA anytime soon.
Francis Ngannou can’t wait to test Anthony Joshua’s chin
As the date of Joshua vs. Ngannou draws near, the Cameroonian-French heavyweight boxer has opened up about his opponent. Furthermore, during an interview with MMA journalist Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, Helwani showed a video of the promoter Eddie Hearn. Subsequently, in the video, Hearn states that the fight between Joshua and Ngannou would be an ‘easy money fight’ for AJ.
However, Ngannou disagreed with Hearn and shared an example of his last fight with Fury. Ngannou brought up how people assumed that Fury would easily defeat Ngannou, but that didn’t happen. In addition, the Cameroonian went on to say that if Joshua took the same shot that dropped Fury, ‘AJ’ wouldn’t get back up.
Additionally, Ngannou stated that he wonders if Joshua has the chin to take such a punch and remains standing and wishes to find out.
