George went into the most important battle of his career so far with a rematch clause in case he lost. Even if he’s among an infinitesimal set of people who would truly want to see him fight Devin Haney a second time, the Sydney native did and is prepared to utilise such provision.

After the defeat, the former champion took to Twitter to state his sentiments, he stated, “Dared to be great and fell short today chasing legacy. Without risk there is no reward. Always chased the hardest challenges! Congrats to the new champ you did what you had to do, full respect mate. I’ll be back For the love of boxing”

Devin was defending his championship for the fifth time and adding the IBF and WBO crowns to his collection with a ‘easy’ victory over Australia’s Kambosos in front of 41,129 fans at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne. “This is a dream come true,” he declared after his bout.

Moments earlier, Haney commended Kambosos for putting his rings on the line after demonstrating his ring experience and executing a brilliant game plan over 12 rounds while being booed mercilessly. In the post-fight interview, he stated, “I take my hat off to him because he’s a true warrior, Anybody that steps into the ring I respect. It was nothing but respect through the whole build-up. Even though he got disrespectful I stayed a gentleman. I stayed professional.”
