The relationship between Gervonta Davis and Floyd Mayweather goes way back to 2015 when Mayweather scouted Davis and made him a part of his promotion. However, things got a little out of hand when Davis decided to leave Mayweather Promotions in 2022.
When everybody thought the relationship between Davis and Mayweather was over, the legendary boxer talked about his opinion on the upcoming fight between Davis and Garcia. Mayweather mentioned that Garcia is not on the same level as Davis and he personally is going to train ‘Tank’ for the fight. Mayweather promised that he will try to bring Davis to the best shape and ready for the fight against Garcia.
“Ryan hasn’t won a title yet. We don’t talk about no interim belt. That don’t count, and we not taking nothing away from the guy [Javier] Fortuna, but he was just an opponent,” said Floyd Mayweather Jr. to Fighthype “I’m going to have Tank in the best shape of his life, and just know, when he hit that boy, he ain’t going to wake up until next year.”
Mayweather made those comments months ago but there was nothing that supported his claims. Davis didn’t mention anything about training with Mayweather or vice versa. It’s hard to tell whether the old pair got together and trained with each other for the fight but given the history between them, it is possible that they might have. Nevertheless, the fans definitely know which side Mayweather is on in this fight.
Timeline of the relationship between Gervonta Davis and Floyd Mayweather
After his retirement, Floyd Mayweather gave Davis the limelight through the Mayweather Promotions and made him the superstar he is now. However, after their partition, Davis might have ruined all the plans of Mayweather. Despite that Mayweather had a positive outlook on the situation and in an interview, he wished ‘Tank’ luck in his upcoming endeavors.
“Nothing lasts forever. I will always love Tank. I like him. Love him – look at him as a son. He has to do what’s best for him,” said Mayweather. “I feel like I’ve done a great job thus far, building him and putting him in good fights, great fights. He’s steady growing, he’s steady learning. I’m proud of him.” Mayweather told BoxingScene.
It seems like both Mayweather and Davis have left buried the past and still have a lot of mutual respect for each other. Davis has the potential to be the next superstar like Mayweather was in his time.
