A controversy has erupted over a social media exchange between Gervonta Davis and a random fan. Furthermore, the controversy has also diverted people’s attention to Davis’ conversion to Islam and raised several questions about it. “Tank” recently embraced Islam and even received a new Muslim name, which is Abdul Wahid. The undefeated boxer received the name at the Masjid Al-Hidaayah from Imam Hasan Somali, who revealed that the name means ‘servant of the one’.
The recent controversy began after Davis was announced as the WBA (Super) lightweight champion, and before that, he was the WBC (Regular) lightweight champion. This happened after Devin Haney moved up to the 140-pound division and relinquished his titles. While reacting to the news, a fan remarked that Davis was an email champion, and Davis fired back at the fan.
The fan responded by referring to Davis as an ’email champion’ and mentioning his new name, which triggered Davis. Davis responded to the fan’s unrelated tweet about the fan taking his family members for drinks.
This isn’t the first time that Davis has fired back at a fan online for trash-talking about him. However, many people felt that Davis took it too far and didn’t have to say all that. Subsequently, several fans reacted negatively to this and even questioned Davis’ conversion to Islam.

The fight between Haney and Davis has been long anticipated by fans, especially because of their rivalry. Though Haney and Davis have engaged in several verbal battles online, they have never faced off in the ring. Subsequently, Haney moved to the 140-pound decision after achieving everything in the lightweight division, except for Davis’ title.
This led to Davis being announced as the WBC (super) lightweight champion, which caused fans to call him the ‘email champion’. However, after this, Davis fired back at a fan and even made derogatory statements about his niece. This led fans to react by stating, “Ni**a has been Muslim for like 4 days.”
Fans were astonished that Davis would go this far to get back at a random person online for hating on him. Furthermore, fans felt that Davis’ comments were unsavory and uncalled for, especially after his recent conversion to Islam. Subsequently, several people questioned it and felt that his conversion was not genuine or a work in progress.
