Michael Jai White, renowned for his roles in “Mortal Kombat: Legacy” and “The Dark Knight,” recently shocked both Hollywood and the boxing world. Portraying Mike Tyson in the 1995 HBO biopic “Tyson,” White has now expressed a bold willingness to confront the legendary boxer in the ring.
Jai White’s audacity in challenging Tyson is rooted deeply in his diverse martial arts background. Initiated into the world of martial arts with jiu-jitsu at seven, White has since mastered a spectrum of styles: Kyokushin Karate, Shotokan Karate, Goju-Ryu, Wushu, Tang Soo Do, Kobudo, Taekwondo, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He later dipped his toes into Muay Thai, kickboxing, and boxing. He also has some experience with sparring boxers such as Lamon Brewster. This led him to say:
Of course, why would I not do somethiong like that (box Mike Tyson)... Are you kidding? Like why would I not?.. Yeah of course I think I would win. I've been boxing champions like, you know, Lamon Brewster.Michael Jai White in an interview being questioned about fighting Mike Tyson
White’s performance against Tyson is mere speculation. Tyson, who hung up his professional gloves in 2005, demonstrated that he still got it after a split draw with Roy Jones Jr.
The potential clash between White and Tyson extends beyond mere physical competition. It is rich in personal and professional rivalry. White’s portrayal of Tyson in the biopic and his subsequent bold assertion of victory injects a personal aspect to the rivalry. Tyson’s critical remarks on White’s performance in the film intensify the stakes. This frames the potential match as a collision of two realms: entertainment and sports.
