Boxing fans have been waiting to witness the fight between Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez for several years. The two Mexican boxers are regarded as some of the best active boxers in the sport currently. In addition, their record and performance inside the ring across their professional career justify these claims. Hence, this is what caused fans to demand a fight between them, but Alvarez is currently set to fight Jaime Munguia.
Fans were not pleased by this fight announcement and expressed their disappointment since Benavidez was the mandatory challenger to face Alvarez. However, even though Benavidez is the WBC super middleweight champion, Alvarez will fight the undefeated Munguia. Even though fans didn’t get their wish, this fight could still be a good one. This is owing to Munguia’s record being much more impressive than that of the ‘Mexican Monster’ Benavidez. As such, Boxingfooty compiled their record, stating, “Jaime Munguía has more KOs than David has fights.”

Both Munnguia and Benavidez made their professional debuts in 2013. However, one has been more active than the other with Munguia having a 43-0 record with 34 KOs, while Benavidez has a 28-0 record with 24 KOs. Hence, while Benavidez has been considered a worthy opponent for Canelo Alvarez, the same can be said of Munguia.
Furthermore, Munguia is only seven potential victories away from achieving Floyd Mayweather’s perfect 50-0 record. Subsequently, Munguia can surpass the Mayweather record since Mayweather achieved 27 KOs across his career, while Munguia has already achieved 34 KOs.
David Benavidez talks about Alvarez vs. Munguia
Munguia, a former super-middleweight champion, has remained a top contender in the division. In 2023, he had a solid win over Sergiy Derevyanchenko, and in January 2024, he stopped John Ryder. Furthermore, Ryder once fought against Alvarez, lost via unanimous decision, and managed to knock him down in the fifth round.

Simultaneously, Munguia was able to knock down Ryder three times, and the fight was stopped after the fourth knockdown in round 9. Hence, Munguia’s recent success has put him in a strong position to face Alvarez inside the ring. Furthermore, Benavidez reacted to this matchup, stated that it was a good fight, and shared his predictions.
Benavidez gave a proper analysis of Alvarez’s style and stated that Munguia has to maintain his discipline with his jab. In addition, Benavidez acknowledged Munguia’s fighting skills and his punching power as a boxer. However, even though Benavidez complimented the matchup and Munguia, he stated that he could defeat both of them.
