“Don’t have any respect for this guy” – Jose Benavidez throws shade at Canelo Alvarez for denying to fight Mexicans
Jose Benavidez Sr. Canelo Alvarez
Canelo Alvarez is all set to take on Gennady Golovkin on September 17 inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The trilogy fight has attracted a lot of attention, especially after Alvarez lost his last fight against Dmitry Bivol.
After the Mexican finishes his business with GGG, his next fight is expected to take place earlier next year. The opponent for the fight might be the winner of the upcoming light heavyweight title fight in Abu Dhabi between Bivol and Gilberto Ramírez. However, it seems like there is a small catch in that scenario.
In a recent media training session, while talking to Fight hype.com, Alvarez opened up about not fighting fellow Mexicans.
“If Zurdo Wins, I don’t want to fight with Mexicans. I don’t want to fight with Mexicans. I think Zurdo has a lot of chance to win, and I want him to win. If he wins, we will see if I want the rematch with Bivol, I don’t know”
This statement from Alvarez confirmed that he doesn’t want to fight someone like Ramírez who is from his country. This also means that Alvarez won’t be fighting David Benavidez which was something his father didn’t take lightly.
“Champions fight anybody”- Jose Benavidez Sr talks about Canelo Alvarez not acting like a real champion
After hearing that Canelo Alvarez doesn’t want to fight Mexicans which includes David Benavidez, his father Benavidez Sr lashed out at the champion in a recent interview with Fight Hub Tv.
Benavidez revealed that Alvarez is trying to be a real champion. By giving the example of the Mexican boxing legend, Julio Cesar, Benavidez explained that someone like Cesar will fight anybody regardless of his ethnicity. He said :
“I’ve never in my life heard a champion [say that]. If he wants to be like Julio Cesar Chavez—to me, Julio Cesar Chavez is the best that Mexico has ever given…He’ll never be like Julio Cesar Chavez ‘cause Julio Cesar Chavez fought black, Mexican, Puerto Ricans, anybody. And this guy is saying that he would not fight any Mexicans.”

Benavidez mentioned that he doesn’t have any respect for Alvarez as he is talking about not fighting Mexican fighters such as David Benavidez and Gilberto Ramírez.
“Now he’s saying that if ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez beats Bivol he’s not going to fight him, he’s not going to fight Mexicans. To me I don’t have any respect for this guy, bro. Champions fight anybody. That (nationality) doesn’t matter,” said Benavidez.
The real reasons for Canelo not fighting Mexican fighters is yet to be confirmed however, fight fans are definitely not taking it in a positive way. Many are criticizing Alvarez for this but there has been no response from the super middleweight champion.
