On Friday 12th May 2023, Canadian boxer Kim Clavel took on Mexico City-born Naomi Arellana Reyes at the Bell Palace in Laval, Quebec. The fight was for the WBC International Light Flyweight title, it was a tough fight but in the end, judges called a unanimous decision in favour of Kim Clavel, she won 98-92, 98-91, 99-91. The win saw Clavel regain her title of Champion as she raised the WBC International Light Flyweight Title.

Kim has had quite a storied career so far, at one time or another in her career she has held the WBC-NABF Female Lightweight title, the WBC Silver Female Light Flyweight title and now the WBC International Light Flyweight title, with her current record of 17-1 featuring 3 knockouts, she will almost certainly look back on her career fondly when she finally decides to hang up her gloves. Today I’m going to take a look at Clavel’s display as well as break down her career a little bit more before we take a look at some of the biggest upcoming fights in the Female Boxing scene.

There were high expectations on Kim coming into this fight as a previous Light Flyweight title holder, holding the WBC and WBA titles until she faced off against Jessica Nery Plata and lost via Unanimous Decision in January 2023. The fans wanted to see her bounce back and get back to winning ways. Kim didn’t disappoint, she found herself on the front foot a lot in this fight, going into it with a game plan that had her pressing vigorously and she stuck to it. Aggression, aggression and more aggression. Kim has been honing her style for years now and she is beginning to see the fruits of her labour.

What’s next for Kim Clavel?

Though the judges’ scorecards and Kim’s aggressive style may say otherwise, the fight was a close one with both fighters giving it their all. Reyes was the more accurate puncher but she couldn’t keep up with the work rate and in the end the aggression proved too much. Clavel’s victory is a major accomplishment for herself and Canadian Boxing in general and she is once again considered one of the top female boxers in the world and will likely be looking to challenge for more belts in her next fights, with winning back the WBC and WBA light flyweight titles surely on her radar.

At 32 years old there is still a lot Kim Clavel can offer the boxing world. As a previous holder of the WBA and WBC light flyweight titles, the only place she has her attention focused is gathering more and more belts. The WBC International light flyweight title is just the start. For Clavel, it’s likely she will be wanting to set up a rematch with Jessica Nery Plata in the next few months, or she could be looking to fight Evelyn Nazarena Bermúdez for the IBF and IBO Championships. Only time will tell however as all 3 of these girls have recently fought!

Now we’ve taken a look at Clavel’s last fight, we’re going to be taking a look at some of the other big upcoming title fights in the women’s boxing world! We have some huge fights coming up including in Manchester, England on July 1st as Britain’s Savannah Marshall steps up a weight class to take on the American Franchon Crews Dezurn with Dezurn putting her Super Middleweight Undisputed Championship! So without further adieu let’s get into it!

Starting with June 10th in London, England. We have an event with three title fights, two of which are women’s titles. Regulated sports wagering was fully regulated in April 2022 for some Canada areas, and Kim Clavel followers can access the best odds for these fights, as we took a look at all of the best sports betting sites available in Ontario available in Ontario and here are the odds we got. First, there’s Nina Huges who takes on Shannon Courtenay for the WBA women’s Bantamweight title, Hughes comes into this one with a 5-0 record compared to Courtenays 8-2 and as you can imagine the odds favour Hughes here, at -450, a $5 stake will return $6.11, while for Courtenay a $5 stake at +350 returns $22.50. The second title fight is Cherneka Johnson taking on Ellie Scotney. Scotney with her 5-0 record comes in as a heavy -600 favourite here returning $5.83 from $5, with Johnson and her 15-1 record netting odds of +400 returning $25!

Next up is the big one we’ve mentioned already. The 12-1 Savannah Marshall coming off the back of her loss against Claressa Shields in October 2022, a fight that had the WBA, WBC, IBF, WBF and The Ring female Middleweight titles on the line. Savannah now sees herself stepping up a weight class to fight the 8-1-1 Franchón Crews-Dezurn. With the Undisputed Middleweight championship on the line, how do the experts see this one going? Well, it seems like the experts think that coming off the back of a loss and home arena advantage will help Savannah as she comes in as -450 favourite, returning $6.11 from $5, while the title holder Franchon sees odds of +300, returning $20. This one is one of the biggest fights on the women’s boxing calendar.

With all that being said, one question remains, what’s next for Kim Clavel? As we mentioned it looks like her options will be the 29-2 Jessica Nery Plata or the 18-1-1 Evelyn Nazarena Bermúdez. Plata holds the WBA and WBC World titles and Bermúdez holds the IBF and IBO championships. If she’s wanting to get her hands on more gold, those are her options. However, we could also see her given a shot at the vacant ‘The Ring’ belt. Though it’s likely that would be a fight against either Plata or Bermúdez anyway. What could be interesting for the Light Flyweight division would be a fight between Plata and Bermúdez, with The Ring belt on the line also, making one of them the Undisputed Light Flyweight Champion, before the winner then takes on Kim Clavel, with her putting her belt on the line too.

Until that is decided, however, I want to know, what are we thinking about these scheduled fights we’ve mentioned? As a Hartlepool man myself I’m very excited to see Savannah represent the town once more and I’m hoping with every fibre of my being that she can push on and get the belts this time, she has fought at super middleweight before and has already held the WBA Inter-Continental belt at this weight, but Franchón Crews-Dezurn is no pushover, she’s ranked 12th in the women’s pound for pound rankings and has become known as “The Heavy Hitting Diva”. Her only loss as a professional was on her debut to Claressa Shields, something both of these fighters have in common it seems! There’s a lot to look forward to in the world of Women’s boxing as the sport goes from strength to strength!
