The former undisputed heavyweight champion, Lennox Lewis, has shared his opinion on the Anthony Joshua vs. Francis Ngannou fight. Joshua and Nganou are slated to fight each other on March 8 in Saudi Arabia as part of the massive Riyadh fighting season. Furthermore, Joshua was supposed to fight Deontay Wilder before this, but the latter unexpectedly lost to Joseph Parker. Subsequently, Wilder was replaced by another hard puncher, Ngannou, and the fight is expected to be explosive.
However, the former champion Lewis believes that this fight adds ‘absolutely nothing’ to AJ’s record. This fight will be Ngannou’s second official boxing bout after making his debut against Tyson Fury in October 2023.
Many people had assumed that Ngannou had no chance of winning, but he shocked the world with his performance. This has led many people to believe that Ngannou will be a threat to Anthony Joshua, and Lewis feels the same. Furthermore, Lewis stated, “
This fight adds zero credibility to AJ’s resume. He’s supposed to win this fight, and when he does, what does he gain or learn by beating someone in his second HW fight? If he loses, then it’s an absolute disaster.
Hence, Lewis believes that this fight will not contribute to Joshua’s career because winning against Ngannou won’t prove anything. However, Lewis has made it known that if Joshua’s losses affect him, his career and credibility will be further damaged.
Furthermore, Lewis believes that this fight is a lose-lose situation for Joshua, and only Ngannou will gain from it. Subsequently, Lewis brought up how Fury almost lost everything and didn’t gain anything from his victory.
Eddie Hearn responds to Lennox Lewis
Ngannou, the former UFC champion, has proven himself to be a force to be reckoned with. Furthermore, in his debut, he managed to knockdown Fury and ended up controversially losing via split decision. Many people believe that Nganno was robbed of his victory and have started to respect and be wary of him.
Subsequently, the former champion, Lewis, voiced his concerns and opinions about this on Twitter. This prompted Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, to respond to the former champion. Furthermore, the latter stated that this fight would contribute to Joshua’s career since the winner would fight against the victor of Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk.
In addition, Hearn stated that this fight will make Joshua the next contender for the undisputed heavyweight titles. Furthermore, he told Lewis that once Joshua becomes an undisputed champion like Lewis, he will be extremely delighted for him.
