In an interview, Mike Tyson expressed his deep respect for the life and legacy of Tupac Shakur, whom he had known for many years. The two men had shared several interests and had grown close prior to the rapper’s untimely passing in 1996. Furthermore, in the interview, Tyson discussed the effects of his friend’s death and his own feelings of guilt.
On September 7, 1996, Suge Knight and Shakur traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada, to attend Tyson’s bout against Bruce Seldon at the MGM Grand Hotel. The fight ended in the first with Seldon’s defeat via a spectacular TKO by Tyson. According to MTV News, Shakur and Knight were scheduled to attend a tribute to Tyson at Knight’s Club 662. However, on the way to the club, Shakur was shot four times by an unknown gunman, who fled the scene.
While talking about the incident, Mike Tyson stated:
I promised to go to the 662 with him that night, but I just had a little baby, and her mother was provoking me to stay home, so I stayed with the baby.
Hence, Tyson revealed that he feels partially guilty for the tragedy that fell upon his best friend, Shakur. Subsequently, Tyson stated that he had pressured Shakur to come to watch the fight and meet them at the club.
However, Tyson could not attend to their plans because he had a newborn baby that he had to stay with. Furthermore, Tupac continued with their plan to meet at Club 662, and on his way, he was shot and killed.
