Many popular personalities attended UFC 287. Dana White sitting with Mike Tyson, Donald Trump, and popstar Kid Rock in the front row, caught the attention of social media. Trump and Dana White have been friends for a long time, helping the sport of MMA grow in its dark days. However, fight fans did not know of the friendship between Mike Tyson and Trump. It dates even further. Tyson publicly supported the Former President of the USA during his presidential run in 2016 and 2020. The legendary boxer showed no hesitation in supporting Trump despite the controversial nature of his reign as the President.
Donald Trump offered himself as Tyson’s personal financial advisor in the 1980s. The real estate baron ended up promoting 18 fights with Tyson. On the Pivot podcast, Tyson talked about his relationship with the former President. “He helped with selling tickets and gave free rooms and food,” said Tyson. Trump actively attended Tyson’s sparring sessions and training camps.
Donald Trump publicly supported the legendary boxer during the rape conviction in 1992. When most of his associates cut ties with Tyson, Trump came out in Tyson’s support during his rape trial in early 1992. “He had some of the worst defense lawyers,” addressed Donald Trump. He added, “The woman was at fault and wanted to reel in money from Tyson.”
Since the defense for Tyson could not prove the consensual nature of the sexual activity, he went to prison. Trump wanted Mike Tyson to pay off the victim with money from his future boxing fights instead of serving six years in prison.
With their friendship in peril at times, Tyson continues to support Trump. He vocally supported Donald Trump’s successful presidential campaign. Trump and Tyson grew up in two very socially different environments. Yet, they had a lot of common attributes. They played it rough, wanted to make big bucks, and respected each other wholeheartedly.
Donald Trump and his ties with boxing as a promoter
Donald Trump has an immense love for combat sports. He contributed to the WWE, UFC, and boxing since the eighties. He also attended UFC 287 in Miami. Trump played an instrumental part in helping Dana White and the UFC in the dark days of the sport. However, before he dabbled in the UFC, the former President of the USA promoted boxing events.
Trump had an excellent record as a boxing promoter. He even taught a thing or two to the veteran promoters. Trump once offered himself as a financial adviser to Mike Tyson. He promoted the world’s biggest fights and names in the late 80s and 90s. On many occasions, business partners and fierce rivals Bob Arum and Kathy Duva stated that Trump managed to burn them financially. He had cleverly manipulated a deal to become the site host of a huge fight. The fight in question was between Evander Holyfield and George Foreman at Atlantic City in 1991.
“Trump was a natural promoter,” says Kathy Duva, as she learned much about hyping up fights from Trump. Yet, Donald Trump never lasted as a boxing promoter. Such is the industry of promoting fights. Donald Trump did not remain a boxing promoter but became the President of the USA!
