Mike Tyson strongly claimed that his former promoter, Don King, manipulated the outcomes of his fights. He manipulated both in his favor and against him. According to Tyson, one of the most notable instances of this manipulation was his defeat to Buster Douglas in 1990.

Tyson’s controversial loss to Buster Douglas occurred on February 11, 1990, in Tokyo, Japan. Tyson was considered unbeatable at the time, holding the WBC, WBA, and IBF heavyweight titles. However, Douglas considered a significant underdog, put on an impressive performance and ultimately knocked out Tyson in the tenth round. The result was highly controversial due to the long count by the referee. Considering various other factors, it is one of the biggest upsets in boxing history.

During an interview while talking about that fight, Tyson said, “Don King did that bulls**t; Don King set me up. I never said that before. The 42-1 (odds), I could win this, him and the referee talk that bullsh-t, because I don’t want to tell you what we did before. That’s just how it went: people are betting, the odds, they got ahold of the referee; they’re fighting me and the referee… I found out later what’s going on… and then they did it to me.

Tyson mentioned that his promoter, Don King, fixed Tyson’s fights without his knowledge. King wanted to make massive money and was doing just that by manipulating the fights.

Tyson got to know about King’s intentions later, and they even had a dispute over financial and contractual matters. This led to a legal battle. In 2005, they reached a settlement where Tyson paid King to end their business relationship, effectively severing their ties in the boxing world.

In a 2020 episode of the Hotboxin’ Podcast, Mike Tyson recalled an incident while driving where he suddenly panicked and lashed out, kicking the individual he was with. He described how, upon kicking Don King in the back of the head, King abruptly applied the brakes.

The moment the vehicle came to a halt, Tyson found himself engaged in a physical altercation with King inside the car. He mentioned attempting to enlist the help of a woman seated in the front to restrain King, as he couldn’t hit him as he wished to. However, at the end of the day, Tyson loved the king at that time. Maybe after the death of Cus D’mato, Tyson found King as his father figure, but it definitely didn’t work out that way in the end.
