Ukrainian professional boxer Oleksandr Usyk defeated his opponent, Daniel Dubois, to retain his heavyweight world title. Usyk stopped Dubois in round 9 with a knockout. Prior to this finish, a controversy took place in the 5th round of the fight. Dubois was able to land a body shot on Usyk, which knocked the Ukrainian boxer down.
But after the punch, the referee, Luis Pabon, intervened to rule out the knockdown as a low blow. After multiple checks, clips online show Dubois’s punch landing on Usyk’s waistband. This case has caused a lot of controversy, with many blaming Usyk’s shorts for the below-the-belt punch.
Later, Oleksandr Usyk was asked in the interview about the situation. He said, “How can I be guilty of wearing shorts? I mean the low blow comes not from me wearing shorts like this but when someone actually hits below the waistline. That’s why I cannot be guilty of it. I’m proposing that I’m ready to fight without shorts.”
Oleksandr Usyk was able to show his dominance and skill throughout the fight. The cleaner blows came from his side, as Dubois struggled to land heavy shots in the earlier rounds. In the 9th round, a strong right hand from Usyk knocked down Dubois. The 36-year-old successfully defended his title for the second time after defeating Anthony Joshua previously.
After this victory, many boxing fans will be anticipating Usyk’s next opponent to be Tyson Fury. The Gypsy King is scheduled to fight former UFC fighter Francis Ngannou in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A future matchup between these accomplished heavyweights will be interesting to watch.
Oleksandr Usyk offers Daniel Dubois a rematch in a street fight
The Ukranian Heavyweight Oleksandr Usyk’s victory against Daniel Dubois became a topic of controversy in the boxing world. The fifth round of Usyk’s knockdown divided the fans into two sides filled with different opinions. Whether a punch to the waistband is legitimately low or not was the topic of debate.
Directly after the fight, Daniel Dubois expressed his opinion on the decision by calling it cheating. The British boxer questioned the official’s decision and asked for a rematch with Usyk. On the other hand, Usyk was able to explain his side of the story to the media. The Ukrainian defended the ref’s call as he spoke about the pain that he felt after the hit.
After finding out about Dubois’s plans for a rematch, Usyk jokingly replied that he is ready for a rematch tomorrow, but in a streetfight, not boxing. Why Usyk is leaning towards a street fight will be a mystery to the boxing world, but the Ukrainian was able to show a calm mind in such an important fight.
