Undisputed superwelterweight champion Canelo Alvarez is set to fight Jermell Charlo in September. With Charlo being a light welterweight champion, he will have to climb two weight classes to contest against Canelo. Many have questioned Alvarez’s matchup choice and have accused him of cherry-picking his opponent. His former promoter and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya also believes a fight against Charlo would not be of much help to the Mexican fighter.

After defeating British boxer John Ryder, Canelo Alvarez started to look for his next opponent. His first choice was to avenge his loss against Dmitry Bivol in the light heavyweight division. However, Alvarez also wanted the fight under the same conditions as the previous one. This did not sit right with Bivol as he wanted to contest Canelo’s titles. The bout was scrapped and after going through a list of opponents Canelo decided to fight Jermell Charlo.

However, Charlo is the undisputed light welterweight champion. To contest against Alvarez he will have to climb two weight classes. This is why Canelo’s former promoter Oscar De La Hoya believes a win against Charlo won’t have much effect on Canelo’s record. He also added that the fight against Jermell Charlo might work as a tune-up fight for the Mexican to fight tougher opponents in the future.

It’s almost kind of like an alright, let me win this fight and sharpen up my tools. So then I can face Benavidez or I can face the tougher guys. I just think that it’s not a win-win for Canelo. That’s it,” said Oscar De La Hoya. The bout takes place on 30th September and will be available to stream on Showtime.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya is facing legal issues with his starfighter Ryan Garcia. Garcia recently experience his first career loss at the hands of Gervonta Davis. While De La Hoya explained that his safety was under threat, his absence turned his relationship with Garcia sour. This led to a legal battle between Ryan Garcia and Golden Boy Promotions. Garcia apparently wants to break free of his contract with Golden Boy and claimed a breach of contract from De La Hoya’s side. ‘The Golden Boy’ also reverted with legal actions to keep Garcia under his Promotion.

Oscar De La Hoya has not been able to have a face-to-face conversation with Garcia as of yet. Despite their problems, the boxing icon has claimed that he wants to create a legend out of Ryan. Ryan Garcia as of now has a couple of years left on his multi-year contract with Golden Boy Promotions. Fight fans will have to wait and watch how things unfold and will Garcia follow the same path as former Golden Boy Fighter Canelo Alvarez?
