Boxing sensation, Ryan Garcia, revealed that Oscar De La Hoya's concerns about Floyd Mayweather's influence were true.

Ryan Garcia has been jumping from one opponent to another for his next fight in April 2024. Initially, Garcia planned on fighting Devin Haney but later decided to instead fight Rolando Romero. Subsequently, Garcia recently revealed that Floyd Mayweather changed his mind about facing Romero instead of his preferred opponent, Haney. Oscar de La Hoya had previously stated that the fight was very close to being agreed upon. 

In addition, Garcia and Haney were in constant communication on social media as they were trying to set up a showdown. However, Ryan Garcia later announced that the highly anticipated super fight could be off in favor of Romero. Garcia also mentioned that Romero would be a bigger and more lucrative fight for him. As such, in an interview with Fight Hype, Garcia stated:

I’m not going to lie, Floyd’s pretty influential. He’s like, ‘Why would you do that? Why don’t you fight 'Rolly' for the belt and then fight Haney?' I said, 'That makes sense, but I told the people already I’m going to fight Devin.' He said, 'Some things change.

After Garcia and Mayweather recently linked up, De La Hoya expressed his concern about his influence on Garcia. Now De La Hoya’s nightmare has been confirmed after Garcia revealed that Mayweather was behind his change of mind.

Furthermore, Garcia’s negotiations for a fight with Romero soon failed, even though Garcia was confident about it. Subsequently, Romero is now set to fight Isaac Cruz instead and will defend his WBA super-lightweight title. 

Fans react to Ryan Garcia’s statement

Garcia has been trying to secure his next big fight and has been in a dispute with his promoter because of it. ‘King Ry’ and De La Hoya were comfortably negotiating a fight deal with Haney until Garcia suddenly changed his mind. Garcia justified his change in decision by claiming that his fight with Romero was bigger business.

However, Garcia has now revealed that Mayweather directly influenced his change of mind. In addition, Gacia revealed that Mayweather suggested he fight Romero first instead of Haney. Fans reacted to this by stating, “Ryan needs to learn to keep his mouth shut sometimes.”

Fans were not surprised after Garcia revealed that Mayweather changed his mind about his next opponent. Furthermore, fans commented on how easily Garcia’s career can be influenced by someone who isn’t a part of his team. Subsequently, some fans agreed with Mayweather’s advice, while others felt that he was teaching Garcia to cherry-pick easier fights.
