Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson was set to make a huge comeback in the ring following his long break in retirement. One of the opponents ‘Iron’ was said to fight was WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. In 2020, the British boxer revealed the situation. Fury touched on the potential exhibition fight and the money that was offered from their team to his.
“I was contacted by Mike Tyson’s people,” said Tyson Fury on IFL TV. He continued, “It was definitely real. They came back and offered us peanuts, completely.” The British boxer revealed the money the retired fighter was offered. “Mike Tyson was talking to me like 500 million figures and stuff. What came back on paper, it was like ‘Okay, this is gotta be a joke. Someone’s crazy.’ I did have an offer on the table from ESPN for $10 million,” revealed Tyson Fury.
The money that was offered to Tyson Fury was only a percentage of Mike Tyson’s earnings. ‘The Gypsy King’ also gave his thoughts on the potential exhibition fight with the retired fighter. “I’d love to have shared the ring with Mike Tyson. I’m sure he can still knock a wall down. But if I wallop Mike in the first round, I’m a bully. So, It’s a lose-lose situation for me. I might be gaining some money,” said Tyson Fury.
“I’m all for Mike making a comeback,” said Tyson Fury. The fighter was revealed to have mentioned a potential comeback to the former heavyweight champion. Although Tyson Fury vs Mike Tyson never came to fruition, fans are still excited about a fantasy fight between the two world-class fighters.
Tyson Fury was named after Mike Tyson
On the ‘Hotboxing with Mike Tyson’ podcast, Tyson Fury and the former heavyweight champion came together. The episode went viral and was one of the best among other guest features. In a segment, ‘The Gypsy King’ revealed that he was named after Mike Tyson. This came as a shock to ‘Iron’ and his co-host.
“I was named after Mike,” said Tyson Fury. He continued, “My dad was a professional boxer in the late 80s, early 90s. And his hero was you. [Mike Tyson]” The former heavyweight champion was stunned as the British boxer uttered those words. “I was eight weeks premature, I was dying,” revealed Fury about the day of his birth. “And, when I lived, my dad was like, ‘I’m gonna call you after my favorite heavyweight,'” revealed Fury.
Tyson Fury’s father, John Fury, is a well-known figure in the sport of boxing. His ridiculous interviews and unhinged nature gained a lot of attention from fans. Fury naming his son after Mike Tyson was quite a humbling feeling for the former heavyweight champion.
