Boxing is one of the oldest sport in the world. Boxers entertained human beings since time immemorial. From Jack Dempsey to Joe Louis to Rocky Marciano to Muhammad Ali to Mike Tyson, heavyweight boxing champion held the ‘The Baddest Man on the Planet’ moniker. However, boxing gradually became a cutthroat business, and corruption became rampant. Organized crime syndicates once held a stranglehold over boxing and gambling.

There have been questionable judges’ and referees’ decisions in boxing in recent years. The corruption in boxing is even at the grassroots level. A recent clip from a regional boxing match went viral on social media. In the clip, a referee acrimoniously stops the match. He would then give an eight count to a fighter and declare the other fighter the winner.

The referee’s decision drew a huge reaction from the audience. Nobody could figure out why the referee stopped the fight. Not even a single punch landed on any fighter. Many found the decision to be the best example to show the corruption in boxing.

In addition to the corruption, another problem in boxing is the best fighters not fighting each other in their prime. When Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Roberto Duran, and Thomas Hearns ruled the boxing world in the 80s, the quartet fought each other multiple times. The biggest fight was between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather in the modern era. Pacquiao was 36, and Mayweather was 38 when the fight happened.

Fight fans react to controversial referee stoppage

The video of the controversial referee stoppage did not go unnoticed by combat sports fans on social media. It spread like wildfire on various social media platforms. The video got close to 300K views on social media platform X.

Fight fans blasted the referee on social media. Nobody could provide a logical explanation as to why the referee did what he did. Nonetheless, see the reaction of fight fans to the video below!

The only explanation anybody could ever provide for the referee’s decision was that he was corrupt. Some speculated that the referee bet big on one of the fighters. However, there can also be instances where somebody blackmailed the referee to make him do so.
