Ryan Garcia recently made a comeback when he stopped Oscar Duarte in the second round of their December 2 bout. Subsequently, Garcia challenged 140-pound WBA champion Rolando Romero to a fight in the post-fight interview. Later, Garcia dropped the idea of fighting Romero and instead began negotiations with Haney. However, after some speculation, it now appears that Garcia and Devin Haney will not be facing each other.
The fight between Haney and Garcia was gaining a lot of momentum, especially since they were both boxing superstars. Furthermore, they were rivals back when they were amateurs, and this professional bout would have been their seventh fight. In addition, they had three wins and three losses each, and this professional bout would have settled that old score. However, in a tweet on January 6, Ryan Garcia announced that he no longer wants to fight Haney. Furthermore, Garcia stated:
I’ve notified my team I’m going a different route. My intent now is to fight Rolando Romero. I pray my team backs me on this decision.Ryan Garcia via X
Garcia’s announcement was shocking since he and Haney were having talks about a big fight in 2024. Subsequently, Garcia instead stated that he wanted to fight Romero because he believed that it was a bigger fight.
This development was strange since Garcia initially challenged Romero and later left that fight to pursue the fight with Haney. However, Garcia has now dropped the fight with Haney to again call out Romero for a potential bout.
Ryan Garcia justifies his decision
Garcia has made a big change of plans in a short period. Furthermore, Garcia’s decision significantly changes his strategic approach and preference for a new opponent.
In addition, recently it came to light that Haney’s last fight against Regis Prograis brought in modest PPV numbers. Subsequently, it was reported that it registered $50,000 on DAZN, which probably caused Garcia to shift his focus. Hence, Garcia announced his intent to fight Romero since it would be bigger, which is better from a business perspective. Furthermore, Garcia believes that this decision will make his fight with Haney even bigger.
Garcia also stated that Haney can instead fight Richardson Hitchens next while he fights Romero. Additionally, Garcia remarked that he doesn’t need Haney because Haney needs him for a bigger fight. Hence, while Garcia has shifted his focus, he can still fight Haney in the future, which fans would want to see.
